From Fr. Mike Gabriel
Today, as daughters and sons of God, we are invited into a great, all-embracing love.
Unlike other festivals in the church’s liturgical calendar, Trinity Sunday centers on a doctrine of the church, rather than an event. It celebrates the mystery of God’s being as Holy Trinity. It is a day of adoration and praise of the one, eternal, incomprehensible God.
Trinity Sunday, in a sense, summarizes all we have been celebrating over the past months which have centered on God’s mighty acts: Christmas to Epiphany celebrating God’s taking flesh and dwelling among us; Easter celebrating Christ’s death and resurrection for us; Pentecost celebrating God the Holy Spirit becoming our Guide and sending us forth in service.
The triune God is the basis of all of us, who we are and what we do as Christians. In the name of this triune God, we are baptized. As baptized, we bear the name of the triune God in our being. We are of the family of the triune God. We affirm this in reciting the creeds, we say what we believe. Our discipleship is rooted in the mighty acts of this triune God who is active in redeeming the world. The triune God is the basis of all our prayers — we pray to God the Father, through Jesus Christ, by the Holy Spirit. Trinity holds a central place in our faith. May our faith be strong and may we experience God’s love and Peace.
Monday is Memorial Day. It's a holiday, but hopefully also a day with meaning for each and every one of us. We want to remember and give honor and thanks for those who have given their lives, so we can enjoy freedom and peace.
Next Sunday is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi).
At the end of the month, there will be some Eucharistic processions and liturgies. They will offer time to join other from many other parishes to celebrate the Eucharist as the source of unity. Our Deanery will have a process and devotions on Friday, June 28, starting at 6:00 pm at Holy Child Jesus Parish (formerly St. Margaret Mary Church), 2324 W. Chase. Our Vicariate will have a celebration on Saturday, June 29, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N. Sauganash.

Care for Real Food and Supply Drive in Church, Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26; Next Weekend: Collection for Asylum Seekers
St. Gertrude will conduct its monthly food drive before and after Masses on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26.
The timing is important; with summer approaching many school meal programs are suspended, putting local children at increased risk of food insecurity.
We encourage you to leave a sturdy bag (or bags) containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal, as well as feminine products and deodorant (both male and female). The donations stay in the community to help local individuals, seniors, and families facing hunger.
Next weekend, June 1 and June 2, we will collect food and supplies for our neighbors seeking asylum.
Thank you for your help!

Second Collection on June 8-9 for Priests’ Health and Retirement
Priests have served the needs of their people from baptism until the last rites. A second collection on June 8-9 will provide for the health and well-being of 411 active & 253 retired archdiocesan priests.
Your generosity to this special collection directly impacts both the many active and retired archdiocesan priests who we have come to rely on throughout our lives.
As we’re all aware, healthcare and retirement costs continue to rise, so there is an urgent need for your gifts to this fund. Your generosity will not only safeguard the health and well-being of our priests, but also support their ability to continue meaningful work in our parish and in the community.

Commonweal Dialogue Returns June 14: Reading Info Below
After a two-year hiatus, Commonweal Dialogue is returning to St. Gertrude’s Parish this June!
Commonweal Dialogue provides opportunities for civil and cordial conversation about topics of contemporary concern at the intersection of faith and politics.
We plan to meet several times a year and to alternate Sunday afternoon tea parties with Friday evening wine and pizza events in the hope that as many people as possible will be able to participate. The readings we have selected we believe will encourage meaningful and enlightening conversation.
Topic: Please read Ursula K. LeGuin’s very short sci fi story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas (available online). This story symbolically raises questions about inequality, individual human suffering, and the common good in many areas of our contemporary social and political life. (Even if you don’t have time to read the story, join us anyway, and we’ll get you up to speed so you can join in the discussion.)
The first meeting will be held on the evening of Friday, June 14 at 6:30 pm in the backyard of John Williams, 1305 West Glenlake in Chicago.
Please RSVP so we know how much pizza to buy! Email Denise DeBelle at ddebelle@gmail.com, John Williams at joolikar@gmail.com, or Verna Foster at vfoster@luc.edu.

Growing in Faith: In the Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!
There is a story told of St. Augustine, that one day as he was walking by the Mediterranean Sea, trying to grasp the mystery of the Trinity, he saw a little boy making a hole in the sand. The boy would run to the water, fill a little pail, and run back to pour the water down the hole. He told Augustine, "'I'm going to put this whole sea, into this hole!' And Augustine responded, "Well the sea is so vast, you will never be able to fit it into something that small". Then, as the story goes, the little boy showed himself as an angel and told him "And you, Augustine, will never be able to take into your human mind, the full mystery of God."
In the best article on Trinity that I have ever read, “Trinity: the Living God of Love,” theologian Elizabeth Johnson CSJ counsels that, since the sole source of the dogma of Trinity is found in scripture, that is where all our discussions should take place. These diagrams of an equilateral triangle with a big eye in the middle miss completely the warm communication of love that forms the context of Jesus’ teachings. He tells his apostles, “The Father and I are one”, (John 10:30), and St. Paul explains to his Corinthian community “the Lord is that Spirit” (2 Cor 3:17).
So what is the message of “Trinity” Sunday? It is our invitation to celebrate our being loved by God, known to us, thanks to Jesus, as Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
