Film and Discussion on the Immigrant Journey – Tues. Nov. 11th 6-7:30pm in the Parish Hall

Please join us in the parish hall on Tuesday, November 11, for an evening of reflection on the immigrant journey. We will show the award-winning documentary “George” about our parishioner George Manias. After surviving the Nazi occupation of Crete, George and his family moved to Peoria, Illinois. Over the years, he has become a local icon and has received a number of civic and church honors, including the highest honor of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, the Medal of St. Paul. Professor Tavi Gabor will offer a reflection drawn from his new book “Immigrant on Earth.” Matt Richmond, who directed and produced “George,” will join us for questions and answers. The event will take place from 6:00-7:30pm. It will also be available on Zoom. Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome.

Wisdom of the Fathers

How much people are deceived who seek happiness far from their own self, in foreign countries and trips, in wealth and glory, in large estates and in enjoyments, in pleasures and in all the luxuries and vanities whose end is bitterness! The erection of the tower of happiness outside of our heart, resembles an edifice which is built on ground which is shaken by constant earthquakes. Soon such an edifice will crash down on the ground. My brethren! Happiness is found in your own self, and blessed is the person who realized this.

St. Nektarios of Aegina

We have within us deeply rooted weaknesses, passions, and defects. This can not all be cut out with one sharp motion, but patience, persistence, care and attention. The path leading to perfection is long. Pray to God so that he will strengthen you. Patiently accept your falls and, having stood up, immediately run to God, not remaining in that place where you have fallen. Do not despair if you keep falling into your old sins. Many of them are strong because they have received the force of habit. Only with the passage of time and with fervor will they be conquered. Don’t let anything deprive you of hope.
