February Center Highlight
International Sunday at Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel
Members of the Bunche Center staff, Bunche Brigade, and Ubiquity, Inc. participated in International Sunday at Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel on Sunday, February 16th, with guest speaker Rev. angel Kyodo williams. Students reflect:

"Hearing from one of the world's only black female Zen teacher was amazing. Something that I thought was unimaginable was standing right in front of me. In the speech, she focused on love and reciprocity, emphasizing the duty for each of us to love one another regardless of one’s belief. Often, it is the fear of not being loved back that keeps us from loving, however, love is a necessity for transformative social change. Without love, we are not whole."
- Destiny Middlebrooks, Bunche Center Student Assistant

" Howard University’s Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel hosted its annual International Sunday on February 16 th at 11am in Cramton Auditorium. The program was a celebration of diverse backgrounds, faiths and cultures but also our most fundamental commonality. Representatives from Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Chapter, Tau Beta Sigma National Band Sorority, Inc., Eta Delta Chapter, and the Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center’s Destiny Middlebrooks and Samiah Fulcher offered greetings to the attendees and opened the service. The speaker for International Sunday 2020 was Rev. Angel Kyodo Williams, an author, activist, master trainer, Buddhist Priest and founder of the Center for Transformative Change in Berkeley, California. Rev. Williams focused her message on the importance of love and “living in love”. Connecting her religion’s principles and messages to those of the Christian and Muslim faiths, Rev. Williams ensured her message was not divisive but unified us all on the premise of our humanity. After the sermon, refreshments were offered in the lower level of the auditorium where Ralph J. Bunche Center representatives spoke with attendees about international opportunities and the role of the Center. At 1pm, attendees were also warmly invited to have brunch with Rev. Williams at the Restaurant at Howard University in the Blackburn Center."

Bunche Center Staff Spotlight
Meet Dr. Lily Lopez-McGee! Dr. Lopez McGee is the Director of the Pickering Foreign Affairs Program, administered through the Bunche Center.

When asked about the origin of her passion for international affairs, Dr. Lopez-McGee stated that her undergraduate experience was the catalyst for her curiosity. She accepted a fellowship in undergrad, which would turn into a personalized experience for her interest. The fellowship was a multi-year program that focused on recruiting and increasing the underrepresented population and funneling them into different careers in international affairs. After a position opened up in D.C, she decided that D.C was the best place to nurture her future in international affairs.

Pursuing a career in international affairs isn’t easy but it’s worth it. Dr. Lopez-McGee encourages all to, “Talk to people who have done the things you want to do.” At times, young people think that they are an inconvenience but [people] truly like helping youth and also enjoy talking about themselves.”

The Ralph J. Bunche International Affairs Center has a lot of moving parts and people. Dr. Lopez-McGee thoroughly enjoys the work environment. “Oh the staff, the people, and the student employees. It’s a work environment where you can bring your whole self to work.” Dr. Lopez-McGee reiterates that her work is filled with excitement, but the people make everyday better.

" What’s something about you that people would be surprised to know?"

Growing up in an agriculturally rich environment, Dr. Lopez-McGee spent a summer (or two), sorting pears in a warehouse her dad managed. She says, “I couldn’t eat pears for a little while afterwards. “
