During the week of January 13
th, Director Tonija Hope Navas participated in a PhD Workshop in Corn Island, Nicaragua hosted by the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua (URACCAN).
URACCAN is a university that serves predominantly Black and Indigenous populations in the eastern part of Nicaragua, a region characterized by its diverse population and is historically English/Creole speaking. Ms. Navas was part of a delegation that included experts from Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia, Spain, Norway and Sweden. URACCAN developed a PhD in Intercultural Studies two years ago and is working to internationalize it so as to appeal to more people throughout the region. Given URACCAN’s unique identity serving traditionally underserved communities, they wanted to hear about the HBCU experience and explore how it might serve them in the strengthening of their program. We look forward to continuing to support them in their efforts.
