Tons of Buns Update: 246 Rescued!
First of all, THANK YOU! When we were called to rescue an estimated 300 bunnies from an overcrowded home, our community showed up to help, and many donated to offset the costs of care for these sweet, sociable floofers.

Our Animal Control Officers have cleared the home completely, and the final count is 246 rescued rabbits! So far, 92 bunnies have been adopted, 88 are in foster homes, and 49 have been transferred to rescues and shelter partners in the region. Four are currently available for adoption and others remain in veterinary care at our shelter. Four moms came in with newborn litters and one litter came in orphaned and required around the clock bottle feeding.

We're reaching out to rabbit rescues and local veterinarians for assistance with low-cost spay/neuter services for bunny adopters and those still in our care. When these bunnies were in need, KHS was there to help -- and so were YOU! We still have a lot of work to do on behalf of the bunnies, and we can't thank you enough for your support. If you haven't done so yet, please give to help with the costs of this extraordinary rescue.
Remembering Dr. Jim Moore
It is with profound sadness and loss that we share the passing of Dr. Jim Moore - one of our beloved Emeritus Board members, longtime volunteer in Vet Services and supporter of Kitsap Humane Society. Jim passed away Tuesday morning from lung disease.

Jim was a retired veterinarian and former owner of Apple Tree Cove Animal Hospital in Kingston. He was a longtime resident of Kingston, married to Sharon Moore, and a proud father of one daughter, Natalie.

Jim joined the KHS Board of Directors in June 2004. He was the only veterinarian on the board at that time and brought tremendous expertise and a quiet strength. Jim served with great distinction on the board for eight years. Over the years he consulted with our shelter medicine team as a teacher, mentor and advisor. He was instrumental in, and an advocate for, the design/remodeling of our existing surgical suite.

Animals were always the primary focus for Jim. He had a gift with animals and you’d hear others calling him “Dr. Doolittle.” Jim was a humble man, and extremely thoughtful and kind. He had a gift with people, too, was a true friend and highly respected.

Most recently, Jim volunteered in Vet Services one day per week performing spay/neuter surgeries. When asked why he continued this work, he would say, "it brings me joy to work at KHS, with the animals and the team." Jim was also a longtime friend and mentor to Dr. Jen Stonequist, KHS Director of Veterinary Medicine. His loss is felt deeply in that department and by all of us who knew him well.
New Time-Lapse Video of Our Shelter Project
So much progress has been made since September 2018, when construction began on our new Pet Adoption Center opening this summer. Every month in Shelter Tails, we'll share a new video to update you on our construction progress.

We're also making progress on our capital campaign fundraising goals, raising $5.6 million toward our $8.2 million goal. We've still got $2.6 million to go! If you're interested in making an investment in our new animal shelter, please contact Donor Relations Director Tom Weed, Director of Development Kim Cizek Allen, or Executive Director Eric Stevens. They'd love to give you a personal tour.
It's a month-long Pints for Pets Pup Crawl!
March 13 - April 10

As many of you know, our Pints for Pets events take place once a month at breweries across Kitsap County. We are joining some of our favorite brewery partners to hold the second annual month-long Pup Crawl!

This event can be done completely by yourself or with your own group of crawlers, or you can join in with other KHS crawlers!

Come to our Launch Party at Shenanigans Pub & Grill in Bremerton on March 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to have a pint and get signed up! Guinness will be on-site etching your very own, signature Pints for Pets Guinness glass. You can create your own message for this glass!

Not sure about the Pup Crawl? No problem! You can still come enjoy a pint and purchase a glass to etch. Can’t make the Launch Party? No worries! We will be posting a link to our online registration on our website. The cost will be slightly different as your post-launch party registration won’t come with an etched glass. But you’ll still receive prizes upon completion!

My Furry Valentine: So Much Love!
Thanks to you, My Furry Valentine was awesome!

Animal Lovers across Kitsap (and from all parts of the world!) participated in our third Annual My Furry Valentine Campaign presented by Earth Animal. We are astonished by all the love you shared!

Over 220 valentines were sent to over 70 shelter pets during the first two weeks of February. This extra support allowed us to shower these special pets with outings, additional chin scratches, and some bonus time on our Instagram page.

This not only added enrichment to their lives while they were with us, but increased their chances of being spotted by potential adopters!
Thomas got lots of Valentine love and was adopted!
Adorable Adoptable
Meet Tazzie!
Tazzie was brought to our shelter in rough shape and needed immediate medical attention for some of her wounds.

She is an adorable Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix who is about 5 years old, and has a fun-loving and charming personality.

This sweet girl is the perfect mix of active and cuddly – she loves to play, but loves nap time even more! Tazzie greets everyone she meets with a hug, kiss, and a tail wag! She loves to snuggle in her blankies and will pick them up with her mouth to tuck herself in at night.

Tazzie is currently our longest resident at KHS and honestly, we have no idea why! She has quickly become a staff favorite with her love of people and is looking for a home that will give her endless amounts of butt scratches and attention.

Will you open up your heart and home to this special girl?
Volunteer Spotlight
Marianne Gibbons!
This month's Volunteer Spotlight is on Marianne Gibbons! Marianne has been volunteering at Kitsap Humane Society since July of 2018 and has served over 100 hours!

Marianne volunteers socializing cats in our Cattery, as well as helping our Vet Services team with preparing surgical packs and monitoring pets coming out of surgery.

When asked why she volunteers at KHS, Marianne told us she loves working with the animals in our care and enjoys helping out the vet team behind the scenes. Her plan is to become a veterinarian! Thanks, Marianne, for all that you do!
