Collected Burghound Reviews
Outstanding
Burghound  Score: 87
“(85% from Meursault and Puligny Bourgogne vines and the rest from declassified St. Romain and Auxey-Duresses in equal proportions) There is a very subtle whiff of the exotic to the citrus and petrol-tinged aromas of white peach and soft wood. The intense, indeed even racy, well-detailed flavors exude a bead of minerality on the saline, dry and lingering finish. This is really quite good for its level and worth checking out. Drink 2022+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(a blend of equal proportions from Narvaux, Tillets, Clos du Cromin, Limozin and Chevalières) A ripe yet cool nose features notes of petrol, hazelnut, acacia and poached pear. There is again excellent energy to the acceptably concentrated flavors that culminate in a clean, dry and crisp finish. This too is quite good for its level. Drink 2024+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(from 1 ha of evenly mixed vines in Houlières, Charmes, La Rue aux Vaches, Rue Rousseau and Enseignères) The elegant and pure nose offers up notes of stylish white fleshed fruit, floral and discreet citrus-tinged aromas. Here too the beautifully textured flavors possess a subtle minerality on the long, balanced and very complex finish. This is an excellent Puligny villages and well-worth checking out. Drink 2025+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(from vines in Charmes-Dessus) Here there is enough post-bottling reduction to largely mask the nuances of the more floral-suffused aromas. As is typically the case, there is more refinement but less size, weight and power to the delicious and gorgeously textured medium-bodied flavors that display excellent length on the citrus-tinged finale. This youthfully austere effort will require at least a few years of patience, but it should be well worth the wait. Drink 2026+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“A markedly more complex nose is comprised by notes of petrol, ripe green fruit, roasted nut and again a hint of poached pear. There is notably better density and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that exhibit sneaky good length on the balanced and moderately firm finish. This is a big wine even by the standard of Poruzots and one that will need at least a few years of bottle aging first. Drink 2026+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“Naturally exotic and overtly spicy aromas include whiffs of jasmine tea, lemongrass and apple compote. The wonderfully refined and subtly stony middle weight flavors are at once intense yet delicate, all wrapped in a Zen-like finish. This is really lovely stuff and so well-balanced it should age effortlessly. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows,

“A cool, airy and elegant nose speaks of even more floral elements that include acacia, lilac and rose petal along with hints of mineral reduction, lemon rind and soil nuances. There is equally good intensity to the sophisticated, stony and chiseled middle weight flavors that conclude in a super-saline and linear finish that is quite firm. This is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and a wine that will also require at least some patience. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(from a parcel of <.33 ha) There is a discreet whiff of exotic fruit character to the white peach, apricot, petrol and acacia blossom aromas. The rich and solidly voluminous medium-bodied flavors possess very good mid-palate density, all wrapped in a clean, dry and refined finish that is sufficiently firm to reward at least a decade of cellaring. This could use a bit more overall depth, but it should have no trouble developing more with time in bottle. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“A touch of unabsorbed SO2 doesn't seriously detract from the pretty, airy and nicely layered aromas of apple, pear and white flower scents. The super-sleek, intense and mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess excellent verve and cut, all wrapped in a strikingly long, balanced and built-to-age finish. This is excellent and should also age effortlessly for a decade plus. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“Here too there is a touch of residual SO2 that may require decanting so that the elegant aromas of honeysuckle, acacia, lilac and poached pear aromas can be appreciated. There is a bit more volume if not quite the same minerality and precision to the beautifully textured flavors that are quite seductive before concluding in a delicious if mildly sweet and warm finish. This is lovely but doesn't possess the class and distinction of the Perrières or Clos de la Mouchère.Drink 2026+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(from 60+ year old vines and the vineyard is a whopping 4 ha monopole within Perrières) A whiff of matchstick is present on the elegant and highly restrained aromas of acacia blossom, spice, white orchard fruit and a hint of Asian-style tea. There is excellent volume and minerality to the strikingly textured medium-bodied flavors that display outstanding complexity on the balanced, dry and impressively persistent finish. This is one very classy wine that is already wonderfully harmonious. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(one contiguous parcel measuring about .24 ha is spread evenly between Chassagne and Puligny; Boillot calls it his Bâtard du Milieu!) Here too there is a whiff of matchstick character present on the white peach, pear and floral scents where there is a hint of spice. The big-bodied, dense and powerful but sleek flavors are a bit more tightly wound on the sappy, mouth coating and citrusy finish that exhibits a refreshing salinity. This is also terrific and as examples of typically Bâtard go, this is admirably refined with excellent aging potential. Drink 2030+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“from both Pernand and Aloxe) A ripe, cool and equally restrained nose offers up notes of green apple, floral, an array of citrus and, like the Chevalier, plenty of mineral reduction. There is excellent power and volume to the delicious yet entirely serious broad-shouldered flavors that possess both terrific cut and minerality, all wrapped in a clean, dry and youthfully austere finale. This isn't quite as dense or powerful as the Montrachet but even so, there is much to admire and note well that this too should age exceptionally well. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“Once again there is a discreet whiff of exotic fruit to the white peach, spiced tea and dried yellow fruit aromas where a background hint of viognier creeps in. The caressing and unusually sleek medium-bodied flavors possess fine volume and focused power on the caressing and refreshingly saline-inflected finish. This is particularly good in the context of a very hot and dry vintage which is not usually especially propitious for Criots. Drink 2028+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“A discreet whisper of the exotic adds breadth to the aromas of petrol, white flower, green apple, mineral reduction and lovely spice nuances. There is excellent richness to the big-bodied, powerful and concentrated flavors that possess evident minerality on the complex, highly complex and strikingly persistent finish. This is presently a block of stone that will require at least a few years to unwind while amply rewarding 12 to 15 years of upside development. Drink 2030+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound

“(from Puligny fruit) As good as the Chevalier is, and it's really good, this is arguably the most complex wine in the range with its mix of highly restrained and super-complex white orchard fruit, acacia blossom, citrus, spice, soft oak and jasmine tea aromas. The wonderfully seductive yet beautifully sleek large-scaled flavors bathe the palate in sappy dry extract while delivering superb length on the focused, powerful and beautifully well-balanced finish. This is a magnificent mineral-driven Montrachet and one of the best wines of the 2018 vintage. A genuine 'wow' wine. Drink 2033+.”- Allen Meadows, Burghound
