HENRI BOILLOT
2019 Red Burgundies
Allen Meadows' Burghound Reviews
“Henri Boillot’s son Guillaume, who is responsible for the reds, described 2019 as “less precocious than 2018 though we still picked relatively early as we began on the 6th of September with the Volnay “Frémiets”. While the fruit really couldn’t have been any cleaner, yields were down some 30% in red and a bit more than that in white. The main reason is a poor flowering as we weren’t too hard hit by the frost. Potential alcohols were strong but not really high at between 13.5 and 14% and this contributes to their fine balance. Indeed, if I had to choose one characteristic that really stands out about the 2019s is their impeccable balance. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I have never seen a better-balanced vintage than 2019.” As the comments and ratings confirm, I was as usual impressed with the Boillot 2019s. Boillot further noted that the reds were bottled in December 2020 without fining or filtration. See also the Maison Henri Boillot wines directly below. Note that except for the Clos de Bèze, Boillot has been responsible for all of the vineyard work as well as the harvest for the Bonnes Mares, Echézeaux, Chambertin and Clos de Vougeot since 2007.” - Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 82

2019 Bourgogne Rouge Pinot Noir
88 points - “Outstanding Top Value”
“(from vineyards in Santenay, Marsannay and the lower portions of Volnay). A fresh, ripe, earthy and nicely layered nose reveals mostly notes of various dark berries. There is outstanding volume for a wine at this level with fine richness and mid-palate density, all wrapped in a suave, round and saline-inflected finale. This is a very good Bourgogne where the only nit is a touch of backend warmth. Note that this would make a fine choice for a house red. Drink 2023+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Volnay Village - SOLD OUT
90 points – “Outstanding Top Value”
“(from the 1er Clos de la Rougeotte). This is aromatically to the Bourgogne but with more elegance and notably more spice. The middle weight flavors offer a step up in volume as well with a more sophisticated mouthfeel that carries over to the detail, moderately stony and equally saline-inflected finale. While this is actually a premier cru in disguise, it is still being declared as a villages wine and offer fine quality for its level. Drink 2025+."– Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets
93 points - “Sweet Spot Outstanding”
“(from a .60 ha parcel). Here the pure and ripe nose offers yet another level of spiciness that includes clove, anise and sandalwood that adds breadth of the aromas of black raspberry, violet, rose petal and tea. The super-sleek, intense and mineral-driven flavors possess excellent delineation while delivering outstanding length on the classy, focused and balanced finale. At least 6 to 8 years of cellaring is recommended. Drink 2031+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets
92 points - “Outstanding”
“(from 25+ year old vines). A markedly more floral nose slowly reveals its aromas of cool and very pure red currant and spiced plum scents. The medium-bodied flavors possess a simply gorgeous mouthfeel along with fine detail before concluding in a mineral-driven and youthfully austere finale. This is firm enough to reward up to a decade of cellaring yet not so firm as to be unapproachable young if desired. Drink 2027+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets
92 points - “Outstanding”
“(A slightly riper and even spicier if slightly less elegant aromas of violet and plum introduce bigger, richer and more powerful flavors that still manage to remain refined and particularly so on the stony, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. As is often the case with a fine Frémiets, this should repay 10 to 12 years of cellaring while being accessible after only 5 or so. Lovely. Drink 2029+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Pommard 1er Cru Clos Blanc
90 points
“(from a parcel purchased in 2007 and replanted; 2018 was the first vintage where this has been declared under its own name as it was previously blended). A cool, pure if very restrained nose features a pretty mix of red and dark currant and earth nuances that are trimmed in just enough menthol and wood toast to mention. There is again very fine volume to the sappy, rich and powerful medium-bodied flavors that, much like the Frémiets, remain relatively refined before culminating in a dusty, saline and beautifully persistent finish. This is lovely and it's not so structured that it couldn't be approached after only 5 or so years. Drink 2027+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru - 3 bottles available
95 points
“(from Chambolle fruit). This too is quite aromatically cool and restrained with its combination of essence of red currant, cherry, lavender, soft spice elements and admirably subtle wood. The juicy and impressively concentrated flavors flash excellent intensity and focused power while displaying the same gorgeous texture as the Echézeaux, all wrapped in a hugely long, serious and impeccably well-balanced finale. This is beautifully refined, indeed while it may seem like an oxymoron given Bonnes Mares' well-deserved reputation for power and muscle, this is more a wine of finesse. Even so, this should have no trouble aging and improving for close to 20 years. Drink 2036+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Chambertin Grand Cru - SOLD OUT
91 points
“(near the very top of the vineyard and atypically, the rows are planted North-South). Like the Clos de Bèze, here too there is a whiff of volatile acidity though in this case it is decidedly more subtle though still perceptible on the more restrained and more floral cool red currant scents. The equally restrained and transparent large-scaled flavors brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a youthfully austere and markedly firm finale. I would make the same observation here as I did with the Bèze, which is to say it's impossible to predict how VA will affect any given person's perception of a wine but in this case, I was less bothered by it than with the Clos de Bèze. Drink 2036+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru
90 points
“There is noticeable volatile acidity to the overtly spicy mélange of red berries and subtly exotic nuances. The sleeker and more intense big-bodied flavors possess excellent delineation that carries over to the naturally sweet, mineral laden and sneaky long finish. This needs to add depth though the underlying material very much appears to be present for that to occur. As I have observed many times in these pages, volatile acidity is something that all wines have, it's the degree that matters and whether the nose would bother most people is hard to judge but it did me. Drink 2036+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
93 points
“(from a <.34 ha parcel in Grand Maupertuis). A brooding and restrained nose reluctantly offers up its aromas of red and dark currant, warm earth and a menthol hint. There is outstanding volume and mid-palate density to the reasonably refined if not exactly elegant flavors that culminate in the hallmark austerity of a classic Clos de Vougeot. Patience not only a virtue but essential with this wine. Drink 2034+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
2019 Echezeaux Grand Cru - 3 bottles available
94 points
"(from En Orveaux). Deft but not imperceptible wood influence surrounds the overtly spicy aromas of violet, tea, red and blue pinot fruit and a whiff of mandarin orange peel. The wonderfully fresh and vibrant medium weight plus flavors possess a gorgeous texture on the saline, youthfully austere and mouthcoating finish. This is clearly built to age, yet the balance is so fine that it could very likely be enjoyed on the younger side. Drink 2034+.” – Allen Meadows, Burghound
