Batla promoted to assistant chief; inaugural captains announced
Brent Batla stepped into the role of assistant chief at the Burleson Fire Department (BFD) on October 1. Batla has been with the department since 1998 and has progressed through each rank from probationary firefighter to the position he most recently held, 1st Deputy Chief. "Our department is very fortunate to have an individual like Brent," Chief Ken Freeman said. "He embodies what a servant leader should be and exemplifies exactly what the Burleson Fire Department represents. We appreciate his dedication to our department and look forward to his continued success."

Batla holds a Master of Fire and Emergency Management from Oklahoma State University and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer program. He is also a member emeritus of Texas Task Force 2 and was recently nominated as Tarrant County College Fire Academy Alumni of the Year. Batla was honored as the Burleson Firefighter of the Year in both 2002 and 2003.

One of Batla's new duties will be overseeing the newly announced captain positions in the department. After a very strenuous testing process Jerimiah Lozier, Mike Jones and Casey Davis were promoted. They will be the first captains in BFD's history and will each oversee a 24-hour shift. The fire department, much like the city itself, has experienced tremendous growth in the last twenty years. From being a department of all volunteers, to a mix of paid positions and volunteers to an all-paid department just 10 short years ago, the Burleson Fire Department is constantly evolving and is excited to bring these changes to not only their organization but to the city as a whole.
City waste and recycling app
We have a trashy app. That's right! It is an app about everything related to Burleson trash and recycling!

It will help you remember what day your bulk trash pick up is, what you can recycle and more.

Go to the app store on your mobile device and search "Burleson Waste & Recycling." Download it, and then type in your home address. The app will tell you when your next collection is (garbage, garbage and recycling, special pickup/bulk collection week). You can sign up for alerts, report if your trash didn't get picked up, be reminded of City holidays and more.

If you don't want to download the app you can get the same information on the city's website.
Change to one-way streets during school hours near Academy at Nola Dunn
Starting Oct. 11 vehicles that are picking up students at The Academy at Nola Dunn will be re-routed to enter on Scott Street versus Dobson Street. Traffic will then proceed to either Eldred or Miller Street, depending on their drop-off/pick-up location. During school zone times only (7-8 a.m. and 2:00-3:40 p.m.) left turns are no longer permitted from Miller Street into the parking lot, also Miller, Clark, Lawson, Bufford and Eldred Streets will all become one-way only streets during this time.

The goal of the redirection of school traffic is to keep the main streets clear so all traffic can disperse more efficiently and to keep emergency routes open.
Pet of the Week - Meet Duke
Duke is a ten-month-old American pit bull terrier mix. Duke is such a sweetheart who loves to cuddle, be petted and play with his stuffed animals. Duke's adoption fee is $85 which includes all of his shots (including rabies), neuter, microchip and heartworm test.

Come by and visit Duke or one of his friends at the Burleson Animal Shelter, 775 SE John Jones Drive. Hours: 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday-Friday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Remember: If your pet has gone missing you may submit an online form, email the animal shelter or call 817-426-9283 to make a report. It is very important to send an email to the shelter with a picture of the lost or found animal so the employees know exactly what to look for.
