A Local "Lawn to Landscape" Project
Did you know that most residential water is used for outdoor irrigation? Lawn to landscape projects offer an attractive solution for creating beautiful and water-efficient yards. Lawns require more water and resources (fertilizer, mowing, etc.) than landscaping with drought tolerant plants and mulch.
Burlingame resident Barbara Nagata converted the lawn in her front yard with fresh new landscaping (pictured above). She explains, “I wanted to remove my lawn for several reasons. I don't see an end to the continuing drought in the near future. Trying to keep lawns green has become quite difficult and will likely become much more expensive in the near future. I also wanted to stop using the mow and blow gardening techniques which cause noise pollution along with air pollution on a weekly basis.” Barbara designed the landscaping herself and installed a drip system with the help of her gardener. She has received compliments from her neighbors and looks forward to seeing the plants grow fuller.
If you are interested in a lawn to landscape project but don’t know how to start, we recommend joining the Lawn Alternatives for Beginners class on October 14. See class details in the "Events Around Town" section below, or click here to register.

Tips for Safely Charging Electric Vehicles
Thinking of buying an electric vehicle (EV)? Take these steps to lower your risk of fire and electric shock injury related to charging EVs.
Before buying an EV, consult a qualified electrician to install a new, dedicated circuit for your EV charging device. Older home wiring may not be suitable for use with EV supply equipment. Your electrician should contact the City's Building Division for permitting information.
When charging your EV, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines on safe charging practices, and check with your local dealer if you need additional information. Choose and install a charging device that suits your charging speed needs (slow, standard, supercharge).
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case a fire starts so you can put it out quickly.
Charging an EV is safe when done with certified equipment. By following these tips, you can lower your risk of injury.
