Greetings! Two nights ago I'm out to dinner with a local fire chief and we start to discuss the future of firefighter employment in our region.
His agency is short staffed and they are leaning on their reserve firefighter staff so paid staff can get a day off. They work 48 hour shifts and its not always easy to find overtime firefighters to work back on their days off.
In the conversation we started to talk about the big dog in our area and the chief said they will need to hire 200 firefighters each year for the next four years. One agency local to me will hire over 800 firefighters. The numbers are crazy. I'm getting job announcements from small departments who are looking to hire several firefighters each.
