Dear NHMS and NHHS students, families and staff,

As previously communicated, contract negotiations between the union representing NHSD bus drivers and ABC Transit, our transportation provider, are ongoing but at this time, an agreement has not yet been reached.

We are releasing the plan below under the assumption that an agreement will not be reached and transportation services will be unavailable beginning tomorrow morning.

Should an agreement be reached this evening or prior to the start of the school tomorrow, and transportation is available, an automated call will be sent to all families. The announcement will also be made through our typical means of communication, i.e. our website, email and social media.

For both arrival and dismissal at the middle school and high school, only the Rochester Road entrance to the hilltop campus will be open.

The First Street entrance from Laurel Gardens will remain closed at all times. No one will be allowed to enter the hilltop campus from First Street in Laurel Gardens.

From Rochester Road, drivers will be directed up the hill and right into the annex gym and around, right past the front of the middle school, left in front of the high school and around the parking lots by the tennis courts and baseball fields, and back down the hill to Rochester Road. Please see the map below.
Arrival

At the high school, the school day begins at 7:20 a.m. Students can be dropped any time after 6:45 a.m. using the Rochester Road traffic pattern described above.

The school day at the middle school begins at 7:50 a.m. Students can be dropped off anytime after 7:30 a.m. There is also an early drop off at the middle school only. This begins at 6:45 a.m. If you need to utilize this early drop off option, please complete this form. One form must be completed for each child. This form is for planning purposes so we can ensure schools are adequately staffed. Students dropped off early at the middle school should enter through the main entrance.

During arrival, all drivers must follow all directions from officers and personnel on-site directing traffic. Please know that students will be asked to exit their vehicle based on traffic flow and all drivers will have to continue to follow the loop through the middle and high school parking lots as described ad shown on the map above. All drivers must serpentine through the entire loop. There will be no exceptions.

Please make sure your student(s) is ready to exit your vehicle quickly with all necessary belongings. This is vital to ensure traffic continues to move. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.
Student Drivers

Students who do not have parking passes but are able to drive to school are encouraged to do so during the strike. No parking pass is necessary.

Please plan to enter through Rochester Road as described above park with other student-drivers in the middle school annex gym parking lot. Carpooling is also strongly encouraged.
Dismissal

High School

At the high school, dismissal will take place in the following waves:

  • 1:50 p.m. - Student-drivers, students riding with student-drivers and walkers
  • 2:10 p.m. - Drivers picking up students. No driver should arrive prior to 2:05 p.m. Drivers should enter from Rochester Road and follow the traffic pattern to the middle school annex gym parking lot where they should park in the parking lot and wait for their student(s) to walk from the high school to the annex gym parking lot. Please see the map below.
Students who have ninth period study hall are encouraged to request an early dismissal and leave immediately following their eighth period class. To request an early dismissal, parents should send a note with their child stating they should be dismissed at 1:13 p.m., when period 8 ends. The note should be turned in to the attendance window in the main entrance vestibule upon arrival to school. Early dismissal pickup can occur in front of the high school until 1:30 p.m.

The high school library will remain open until 3:15 p.m. for high school students who need to remain at school while they wait for their ride home.

High school staff have been instructed to leave the school immediately following dismissal to clear the high school parking lot for middle school dismissal procedures.
