Bush Clematis
Beautiful non-twining cultivars to grow like perennials

What is a clematis that doesn't climb or twine? Well, it's a bush clematis, of course!

Many of us might assume that all clematis are climbing vines but, in fact, there are various species that do not climb at all.

Some are short, stocky plants that grow like upright perennials. These are great for the front or middle of the border. Others have longer stems that can be upright, arching or sprawling. These can be allowed to lean and weave into neighbouring plants, planted close to an upright strong plant or shrub that can support the stems so they remain upright, or the stems can be grown into a supporting structure such as an obelisk or a group of stakes. These cultivars are best for the middle or back of the border.

The flowers of bush clematis are also different from what you’ve come to expect from the genus. They are quite small, often just an inch across, but they are produced in great numbers creating enchanting clouds of beautiful star-like or bell-like flowers than can be outward-facing or nodding. Usually the flowers have four tepals around white or yellowish centres. Many cultivars are reblooming and they often produce attractive fuzzy seed heads.

A further difference from climbing species and cultivars is that bush clematis are herbaceous. They do not maintain twiggy, woody growth through the winter but actually die back to the ground to start fresh in spring. There’s no reason to worry about remembering which pruning group each cultivar belongs to. Bush clematis will remind you what they need each winter. Just clean up the withered stems and watch the new growth emerge in spring

Have fun integrating bush clematis into your garden. And… they also do very well in pots!

*PLEASE DO NOT MIX PRE-ORDERS OR THE MAIN CATALOGUE: The plants in each pre-order are only available for shipping or pick-up during a specific period each year. Orders for each pre-order must be placed separately from other pre-orders and our Main Catalogue. Please do not place mixed orders. Mixed orders will be charged an administrative fee of $5 per pre-order/main catalogue order to cover our costs of separating and organizing your orders. As a rule, all pre-orders and main catalogue orders ship separately due to timing and different packing requirements. The Amazing Apple Pre-Order
59 Heirloom, Red Flesh, and Dwarf Varieties for Pick-Up in March/April 2022

We are pleased to launch a brand new pre-order featuring rare heirloom and red flesh apples along with trees for small spaces including modern varieties grafted onto dwarf and mini-dwarf rootstock and columnar cultivars. All of these apples should be hardy to zone 4. Most will require another different apple as a pollenizer so we recommend planting more than one apple in your garden. However, if your neighbours have apple or crabapple trees, these can also act as pollenizers.

Red flesh apples are among the most intriguing and popular cultivars among apple collectors. They are crosses of red fleshed crabapples from Central Asia with white fleshed commercial apples. The resultant cultivars have flesh that ranges from soft pink to bright pink to bright red. Some cultivars have a mix of white and red throughout the flesh. Their blooms are also often pink or dark pink. As with all apples, each red flesh cultivar has its own particular flavour, aroma, and balance of sweetness and tartness. Red flesh apples can be used for fresh eating but they become particularly fun for use in pies, and for apple sauce and ciders!

Heirloom Apples: We are excited to offer a wide range of heritage apples from Europe and North America, many of which are hundreds of years old. These apples connect us with gardeners and apple lovers as far back as the 1600s but also offer us fun and unusual shapes, colours, textures and flavours for fresh eating and to play with in the kitchen.

Dwarf, Mini-Dwarf, and Columnar Apples: These mostly modern cultivars offer sizes and shapes that fit better into our smaller gardens but still provide great production.
