Farm Fire Unit Handbook and resources

To help farmers fight fires safely the South Australian Country Fire Service has developed a Farm Fire Unit Handbook, which provides:

  • guidance toward fire ground safety, behaviours and communications
  • recommendations for farm fire unit vehicles and equipment
  • recommendations for the wearing of personal protective clothing and safety equipment.

There’s also a great farm fire safety video which provides invaluable information and instruction about dealing with fire on your property.

Last hurdle cleared as government now set to allow water buybacks for Murray-Darling

The Commonwealth will have a green light to enter the water market and buy irrigation water from farmers to boost the environment, with the Albanese government securing the numbers to re-write the Murray-Darling Basin Plan.

And while we’re on water resources …

Environmentalists and farmers are hardening their resolve against a proposal to inject liquefied carbon dioxide into Australia's biggest underground fresh water reservoir. The Great Artesian Basin (GAB) spans more than a fifth of the continent, is worth about $13 billion to the national economy and is a vital resource for communities and businesses.

Farmers say zero-emissions food still years away as agriculture rises up global climate agenda

As global climate summit COP28 kicks off, food systems will be in the spotlight like never before — both as a casualty of climate change and a big contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

Experts say regulations should be based on facts, not fear, as country towns adapt to wind power boom

A Wheatbelt shire has approved a draft framework outlining how wind farms are to be developed in the area, following two neighbouring shires approving similar draft policies last month.

New power infrastructure is an increasingly common issue in regional areas that we all need to keep abreast of.

Telstra 3G Closure Announcement

Back in 2019 we announced that we’d be closing our 3G network, which you might also know as the Telstra Next G network. Doing so allows us to repurpose the 3G spectrum to offer better coverage and reliability on our 4G and 5G mobile network.

There’s more information in “Our 3G closure in 2024: your questions answered” here

GROWER TO GROWER

Have a question? Need some advice? Ask a fellow grower!

The FOE team regularly hears from growers with questions about grove or production practices, or equipment, that they just can’t find the answers to. They’re things other producers are likely know about and/or experienced themselves. So we’ve set up a new Friday Olive Extracts feature, Grower to Grower, where you can send your questions and have them answered by your peers.

Just send the details to editor@olivegrower.com.au and we’ll put them out to the Friday Olive Extracts community - that’s thousands of readers across the globe.

Opportunities

SA & Qld funding still available via Horticulture Netting Program

The Federal Government funded Horticulture Netting Program was extended nationally following the first phase, with applications now set to close mid-2024 (or until all funds are committed).

Assisting more growers to buy and install protective netting, or replace damaged netting, over land used to grow horticulture crops, the program aims to:

  • build growers’ ability to handle climate change
  • grow more high-quality crops
  • support the agricultural industry reach its Ag2030 target.

Research shows protective netting helps growers produce better crops, in higher numbers, strengthening food security. The nets can also reduce water usage by up to 30%.

Funding allocations are being handled by state and territory governments, and applications have closed for producers in NSW, VIC, WA, and TAS, but are still open in SA and QLD. Find out more and apply here for SA and here for QLD.

Olive oil producers turn to tourists to combat soaring costs, extreme weather

Maria Angela Macchia jams a 10-foot pole topped with an electric comb into the upper reaches of a 200-year-old olive tree and revs the engine. The long-toothed tool, created to extract stubborn fruit from the highest branches, vigorously shakes the crown of the tree, sending a trickle of olives cascading to the green nets below.

Olive oil production in Europe expected to reach 1.5M tons in 2023/24

Yields are expected to rebound after last year's historic lows. However, rising prices will hamper exports and consumption.

California olive oil industry sees growth opportunity amidst international production downturn

The California Olive Oil Council (COOC) announced the commencement of the 2023 harvest season for California extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). With international production levels experiencing a decline due to climatic events, this presents California with a unique opportunity to step up and meet consumers' needs as the harvest season approaches.

As we do here, with the lack of European supply meaning fresh, new season’s Australian products are now available to consumers at comparative pricing to imported products.

Acesur expands U.S. footprint

Acesur, one of the world’s largest olive oil producers and bottlers, continued its presence in the United States by purchasing 356 hectares in California.
