Message from Senior Vice President Jean Vock

Hello colleagues,

The fall semester is upon us and campus is already abuzz. We’re wrapping up our inaugural Rebel Ready Week, an event that brought incoming students to campus before classes start to help acclimate them to our university, culture, and resources. When classes begin on Monday, we’ll welcome our largest incoming class of approximately 4,600 first-year students. Our men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams are already in action, and our cross country and football teams kick off their seasons Sept. 2. 

Business Affairs teams have done a remarkable job of helping the university prepare for these “firsts”. Thank you for your diligent efforts to make sure students and their families have the experience they expect from a Top Tier university. It is an important part of setting them on a path to academic success. 

This is always an exciting time, but this year it is bittersweet for me since it will be my last semester at UNLV. I want to thank everyone who was able to attend my farewell reception. I appreciated the kind words and well-wishes from President Whitfield, Provost Heavey, and Business Affairs’ associate vice presidents. A special thank you to Rachel Howland from the Office of the Senior Vice President, Ron Singer from Planning & Construction, and everyone who helped organize the event. It was a wonderful send off and I’m happy to share some photos from the event below.

Farewell Reception Highlights

Here are some highlights from Jean Vock’s farewell celebration on Aug. 16. We thank Jean for all she has done and wish her well on her new journey!

June Employee Appreciation Recipients

Armando Campos

Facilities Management, Controls Shop

Armando was nominated for his recent work at the Satellite Energy Plant (SEP). While replacing a broken hot water flow meter, an unforeseen emergency caused a significant leak. Due to potential flooding, over $68,000 worth of electrical equipment was in danger of being damaged. He immediately took the necessary steps to control the situation. As a result of his quick thinking, there wasn’t any loss or damage of equipment, personal injuries, or downtime in research facilities. Thank you, Armando, for all you do!

Sang Yi

Administration Technology Services

Sang was nominated for his commitment to employee engagement, retention, and well-being. He recently volunteered his analytics expertise to support the Business Affairs Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workgroup. He provided data-driven analyses and explained his findings in a way that was easy to understand. The workgroup will use this information to help drive actions to make our division more inclusive and welcoming. Thank you, Sang, for all you do!

Know Before You Go: 7 Parking Tips for Fall 2023

With the fall 2023 semester beginning on Aug. 28, UNLV’s Parking and Transportation Services has enhanced parking to make it more convenient for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Check out this UNLV News Center article for helpful parking tips to ease your navigation around campus.

Spotlight on Service

A coalition of Business Affairs employees recently completed a critical safety project at the FAB1 Building. The parking lot safety improvements/modifications will help staff, students, and visitor vehicles/pedestrians move through the area more efficiently. 

The resulting scope of the project included:

• Adding a no-parking stall
• Changing parking lot striping
• Establishing a pedestrian walkway in between parking stalls
• Installing eight new speed bumps to meet Clark County Fire Department specifications
• Installing 90 wheel stops
• Painting light pole bases to increase visibility 
• Painting yellow stop bars
• Repainting ADA parking stall logos, including bumpers
• Repainting 90 feet of red hashed area
• Repainting 100 feet of red curb
• Repainting 480 feet of existing red wall

UNLV’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) partner ComPsych offers suicide prevention awareness and mental health resources for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.
