Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

September is observed as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month to increase awareness about suicide and those suffering from suicidal behaviors.

UNLV’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) partner ComPsych offers resources on suicide prevention awareness and mental health.

EAP resources are available to all UNLV employees and eligible dependents.

In addition to the EAP, 988 is a direct three-digit line to trained National Suicide Prevention Lifeline counselors and is a useful resource for mental and behavioral health support.

Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 every year to acknowledge the important contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latinx community. Unlike many other monthly celebrations, HHM begins in the middle of the month to highlight September 15, the anniversary of independence for Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Established in 1968 as “Hispanic Heritage Week”, the celebration was extended to a month in 1988.

To honor members of the American Latinx community during this time, learn more about the plight of American Latinx and how their cultures have influenced cultures around the world. The City of Las Vegas has several events planned both virtual and in-person. Current students are invited to attend the Identity Month Celebration: LatinX Heritage event taking place on Wednesday, September 21.

Employee Profile: Jeff LaGesse

Jeff LaGesse, parking operations and events administrator for Parking and Transportation Services, came to UNLV more than 30 years ago.

LaGesse, who grew up in the small town of Kankakee, Illinois, graduated high school in 1992 and moved to Las Vegas to start his college journey as a criminal justice major. A few years later, he got hired as a student worker for the Parking and Transportation Services department and became a full-time employee in 1996.

“Coming to UNLV, I didn’t know what my journey would be like,” he said.

“My time here has been such a blessing. I love my job and the people that I work with. We’re a close-knit group. I couldn’t have asked for a better career.”

Over the years, his role with the department transitioned into managing the parking enforcement program. “I wasn’t in the field as much but I still enjoyed the different aspects of the job and helping the department grow and handle more events, especially with new technology and enhancements. We went from writing handheld tickets to now having the license plate recognition (LPR) technology, where physical permits are no longer needed.”

His other accomplishments include spearheading a new event parking process for campus departments and organizations. “This idea came about four years ago,” he said. “It was all about trying to find a system that works. When you think about a university and parking, everyone operates a little bit differently.”

Besides launching the new program, he was also involved in helping the campus transition from meters to a cashless hourly parking system. For this project, he oversaw the removal of more than 850 parking meters and scheduled staff to perform the work needed. He also worked with a vendor to design custom signage with information about using PayByPhone to replace the meters.

When he’s not working to implement new parking technologies or advance a program, LaGesse spends time with his family. His wife Brandi works at UNLV and his two children both attend UNLV, one is a freshman and the other is a senior. One of his many hobbies is doing puzzles with his wife. “Once we get done, we take a picture of it and put it in a photo album,” he said. “We've done over 200 puzzles since we’ve been married.” LaGesse also likes to play board games, go golfing, and coach little league baseball.

Spotlight on Service

In October 2021, we distributed our annual Business Affairs customer service survey. Many of our campus colleagues replied to the survey with notes of praise for our hard-working teams. See below for some highlights for our Parking and Transportation Services team.

“It’s always a pleasure to deal with the office of parking and transportation. Everyone in the office up to and including management is always courteous and great to deal with.”

“Parking lots never looked better and parking services have gone out of their way to assist those with questions related to the best parking solutions for those on hybrid and/or remote work schedules.”

Human Resources Professional Development Opportunities

Human Resources is hosting a day full of free professional development opportunities on Tuesday, September 13.
