2017 Business News
The year ended with perhaps one of the most momentous business events not only for 2017 but the last few decades with the groundbreaking for the new Cresco Labs facility. On December 14, Charlie Bachtell President of Cresco Labs along with business and government leaders from Yellow Springs, turned the first shovel of dirt for their new 25,000 square foot facility on approximately 10 acres on the northwest corner of the village-owned property at Dayton-Yellow Springs and East Enon. Construction is expected to take about five months and the enterprise will initially start with around 20 employees with the possibility of growing to 75 as sales and production of medical cannabis increases.

A business that hasn't stopped growing since it began operations in 2013, Yellow Springs Brewery received planning commission approval to build an event space at their warehouse location at 1475 Xenia Ave. They have also ramped up production in that facility and the Millworks brewhouse to keep up with the demand for their products especially cans.

There were major changes to the landscape of downtown retail with the retirement of two long-time business owners. First, Mark Crockett and Gail Zimmerman retired and closed Rita Caz Jewelry Studios. Then Priscilla Moore retired and closed Mr. Fub's Party Toys & More.

Both of those closures have happy endings as the Rita Caz space was taken by House of AUM, who already had a yoga studio and boutique in the rear. They expanded into a beautifully remodeled space filled with yoga merchandise and gifts and providing a bright spacious location for classes. And we will soon be welcoming Yellow Springs Toy Company, owned by local resident Jamie Sharp, into the Fub's location.

Some new retailers also opened in Yellow Springs in 2017. The Blue Butterfly opened on Dayton St selling specialty home goods and gifts. Wander & Wonder opened on Xenia Avenue selling clothing and items for outdoor enthusiasts. Lady Loom, also on Xenia Ave was the second shop for Wildflower Boutique owner Danyel Mershon featuring unique clothing and accessories for women. And last but not least, Little Fairy Garden opened at the rear of King's Yard featuring items for gardens and hosting parties.

We were also happy to welcome Gilah and Shep Anderson as the new owners of the hardware store aptly named Yellow Springs Hardware. It is so important for the shops that provide goods and services for residents to remain strong and we have no doubt that they will continue the commitment to provide the goods and services villagers have come to know from the hardware store.

On the food front, we had an opening and a closing. First we welcomed Miguel's Tacos to the rear of the King House behind Asanda Imports selling fresh and authentic tacos, burritos and bowls. Unfortunately, our other Mexican restaurant, Dona Margarota's closed its doors late in November with an uncertain future for the building.

Village government also undertook several projects including a new sidewalk on part of Yellow Springs-Fairfield and N. Winter St as part of Safe Routes to School and ADA compliant crosswalks on the west side of Xenia Ave. Facilitating the development of the CBE, the village extended water, sewer and stormwater infrastructure to the entrance to the property on Dayton-Yellow Springs Rd. Most importantly, by year's end, the new Yellow Springs Water Treatment Facility will be operational and delivering manganese-free/moderately softened water to the community. And the farmed portion of Sutton Farm is now owned by Glen Helen to be restored to it's original forested landscape.

Miami Township Fire & Rescue was successful in their levy to build a new firehouse on the old Wright State Physicians property on Xenia Ave with construction in 2018. Yellow Springs Schools discussed a variety of options for new facilities and after community input decided on the recommendation of a new/remodeled Middle School and High School at the existing location. A levy is expected on the May 2018 ballot.
