Build a Skill is a collaborative initiative by Wainwright and District Family and Community Support Services (WDFCSS) and Wainwright Economic Development (WED) designed to connect youth (ages 15 to 25) with adult mentors in the community to learn practical vocational and life skills. The goal is to provide students with valuable hands-on experience while encouraging personal growth and career exploration.
Community mentors will arrange a date and time with the organizer to speak to youth on a specific skill in a safe, supervised setting. The session(s) will be scheduled within the October 2025 to March 2026 timeframe, depending on the mentor’s availability. The organizers will cover the cost of any marketing and necessary materials and will manage all youth registrations.
Mentor Responsibilities
Youth Numbers: You can choose the number of students you’d like to mentor. There’s no limit; you may select as many or as few as you prefer.
Session Scheduling: Once youth applications are reviewed, the organizer will contact the mentor with the number of students interested. The mentor and organizer will coordinate the date and time of the session, and the organizer will inform the youth of the session details.
Session: The mentor is expected to prepare for and lead the session at the scheduled date and time.
Insurance Information: The business providing the mentorship will be responsible for supervising and covering the students under their insurance, just as they would with employees, volunteers or job shadowing.
Survey: Following the session, both the mentors and youth will be asked to complete a short survey to help improve the program for the future.
