Message from the Chair

Dear BLS Member:

Congratulations to Robert Barron, Woody Pollack and Dineen Wasylik, the leadership of the Legislation Committee and, of course, to our amazingly talented legislative consultants, Aimee Diaz Lyon and Doug Bell. The BLS had another excellent legislative session, passing four (4) bills and providing technical input and assistance on many other bills. Thank you and Kudos to all on a great job. A reminder that if you think your committee will be introducing a bill in the 2025 session, please let Robert/Aimee/Doug know as soon as possible.

Beyond Incentives: Copyright in the Age of Algorithmic Production

By Professor Zachary Catanzaro

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems disrupt longstanding assumptions about creativity, originality, and copyright law. Traditionally, copyright law is premised on an incentive theory—that monopolistic profits motivate human creators to be creative.

What Every Business Lawyer Needs To Know About Captive Insurance and Why It Matters in Today’s Hardening Insurance Market

By Amanda Luby

Not entirely distinct from the well-publicized homeowners insurance crisis that Florida is currently experiencing, Florida businesses are experiencing their own insurance nightmare. This insurance plight has brought with it rising premium rates and reduced coverage, exposing businesses to losses and thinner profit margins.

Message from the Chair, continued

We look forward to seeing a number of you in Scotland for the upcoming Executive Council Retreat in Edinburgh. In addition to time in Edinburgh, we will travel to Glasgow, up the coast to St. Andrews and have a post trip in the Scottish Highlands. And of course, many of us will enjoy a few drams!

At the risk of sounding repetitive, for all substantive committees, subcommittees and task forces that have not put on a one (1) hour CLE yet, please put on two (2) CLEs of this type between now and the end of the Bar year on June 30. If you have questions about these CLEs, please contact me (mark@marksteinlaw.com) or Luis Rivera, the chair of the CLE committee at Luis.Rivera@gray-robinson.com. Remember, these are CLEs that many of your members could create with minimal effort and it allows the BLS to showcase its members and their breath of knowledge.

Finally, Manny Farach, the BLS Chair-Elect has circulated an Annual Committee Chair Report. If you are a committee, subcommittee or task force chair, please complete this report and return it to both Manny mfarach@mrachek-law.com and Carly chopkins@floridabar.org as soon as possible. Manny is hard at work on the BLS slate for the 2024-2025 Bar year, so please contact him with any questions or to discuss any topic related to the upcoming Bar year.

Thank you again for allowing me to serve as section chair for this year. It continues to be a great honor and great experience for me.
