The Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation has been receiving a high volume of calls from entrepreneurs seeking technical assistance to sustain their small businesses. “We usually experience a peak two or three times a year, but currently, that’s not the case”, said Sandra Vidrio, Business Development Officer. Many Hispanic entrepreneurs face language or technology barriers that prevent them from moving forward to start their businesses. This is when The Foundation jumps in to help community members turn their dreams of entrepreneurship a reality.

The Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation would like to recognize small business owner Rosa Sanchez in honor of Mother’s Day Month. She’s a valley entrepreneur from Mendota, CA who owns a bakery business inspired by her abuela’s homemade bread. Rosa participated in “Womanpreneur Summer Cohort 2020” where she learned different marketing techniques to help her promote and expand her business. As a first-generation business owner with a passion for baking, she makes sure to use high-quality ingredients grown here in our valley to support the local economy and small businesses.
Carmelita’s Pan Casero is more than a bakery business, it’s heritage, culture, and tradition in every bite. Rosa learned to bake by watching her abuela bake her delicious homemade “pan de leche”. Every piece of her baked goods arose from the fond memories of her abuela’s baking. Her grandmother’s baking was so well-known, that Rosa decided to combine her passion for baking and her family’s traditional recipe into a thriving business. Carmelita’s Pan Casero has been operating since 2018, offering a wide variety of delicious homemade traditional bread. She is now the first in her family to become a business owner who delivers products to over 40 different stores in 10 different cities in the Central Valley.
Growing up, Rosa had always been a fan of her grandmother’s baking. She recorded her recipes with love and captured the beautiful memories, which also helped her overcome difficulties in life. It became a trait, a powerful source of strength that pushed her through the ups and downs of community college. The very same trait that gave her courage to care for her daughter’s chronic illness.
During these tough times, especially with the pandemic, she gives her blessings to the community, whose love and support has helped her business. As a mother and a woman entrepreneur, Rosa sets a great example for her children. She learned to master time management, operate her business, and spend quality time with her family. She strongly holds that with the right mindset and dedication, nothing can stop us from accomplishing our goals.
"If you add passion with consistency, it will produce success." -Rosa Sanchez

Manuel Martin Sanchez is an independent truck driver owner of “CBFS Trucking Rosalyn” who currently lives in Fresno, CA, and travels across the state picking and dropping off cargo. As many small business owners, Manuel was affected by the pandemic and struggled with being able to sustained his business. He had already given up on continuing his business until he met Yurubi Ramirez (Rubi) from the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation.
“The pandemic has caused many challenges and the closure of many businesses, especially small businesses. After seeing how my business was going downhill, not being able to hold it from falling apart on my own, I tried to look for help, but the doors were closed”, said Manuel as he expressed his disappointment in not being able to sustained his business as he looked for help. He visited a few organizations, but all of them asked him to pay high amounts of money for their services, as well as to give them a monetary portion of any type of help that he could qualify for. This discouraged Manuel from trying since the numbers wouldn’t add up in his favor.
“My wife and I were watching ‘Arriba Valle Central’ and that’s where we heard about The Foundation. I had lost hope in my business, but my wife encouraged me to go to The Foundation and give it one last try. When I walked in there, I was scared and had many doubts due to my past experiences, but once I started talking to Rubi, hope came back to my heart and made me realized this is not for me, this is for my family”, said Manuel. Thanks to the help of the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation, Manuel was able to qualify for the California Relief Grant for $15,000 and the Paycheck Protection Program for $20,000. This money will help him sustain his business by covering payroll costs, insurance, and other operating costs.
“The service from The Foundation is excellent. My family and I are very thankful for them. They helped us save our business free of cost. Everyone is welcoming, approachable, and ready to give a hand.” -Manuel Martinez Sanchez
