Nominations for 2020-2022
SNR Board

Hello everyone! As we start a new club year, we have the important task of filling the slate for the SNR Board for the next biennium. Any member can submit a nomination so please be thinking of those members that would make great leaders. We need candidates for Governor-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer and District Directors. Remember that a candidate for Governor- Elect must have previously served on the SNR Board. All other candidates need to have been President of her Club. Board members cannot hold a club office at the same time. Here is the updated Nominating Form .

Deadline for nominations is November 15,2019.

Thank you.

Let's Take The Train!
November 1, 2019 Update

Now that registration for the Convention in Bellevue is open, I want to remind everyone interested in a fun (affordable) Grand West Coast Train Adventure to Washington that we need to get a group together to make a group purchase(s) soon to ensure the best rate and upper level. Our mission now is to organize who wants to be in a group purchase for those leaving from the various stations. For example, Marysville-Yuba City is departing from the Chico Station. Rates/options discussed below are as of today. Once we get an approximate number of train travelers, I will contact the Grand Hyatt (venue) for shuttle information to the hotel once we arrive on Tuesday evening.

Please review the announcement linked here  for further details.

 Message from President
Carrie Pavis

Greeting Soroptimists!

We are starting our 3rd month of this Soroptimist year and seems like we have not had a  break. We hit the ground running in September, and we have already accomplished so much!
November will be another busy month for all of us, but I know we can handle it.

Hats off to our fundraising committee, co-chairs and of course huge kudos to Ann Leon!   I have heard that the fundraiser did very well, but I will have Bonnie and Lupe share that exciting news

All of our committees have been doing such a great job coming together and accomplishing so many great things. It makes my job as President a lot easier. Thank-you all so much for your part in this success.

Membership had a Getting to Know You in October, and it sounds like we will have a few new members. Way to go Bev and Kimm!  Let's make sure we welcome our new members and answer any questions they may have.

Please take some time to read the E-blast all the way through. We have a couple of events that are coming up and one we have to respond ASAP

SI South Yuba, a brand new club in our region will be hosting its Charter Dinner on Friday, November 15 in Wheatland. I would love to attend with some other members of SI Chico! Who wants to go?! They have extended the RSVP deadline to this Wednesday, November 6 so let me know right away!

Please see the message from Bonnie regarding the Camp Fire anniversary. How can it already be a year gone by? Also, I want you to know I am reaching out to clubs in the Kincade Fire area to see if any need our assistance.

See you at the Business Meeting!

President,

This Week's Program

Inductions:  2 new members will be joining us.

Today is Soropti-wear Day
November
Member of the Month

Shawn Murphy

I came to Chico in 1999 to visit a friend and fell in love with the area immediately.  I became a resident that fall, after spending my entire life in rural Oregon.  I have two daughters, ages 14 and 16, both of whom are enrolled at Inspire School of Arts and Sciences. I also have one needy Doberman and three chubby cats.  I love the beach, backpacking, hiking, and camping.

My childhood dream was always to become a lawyer, but I came from a disadvantaged background and we didn't have the funds for such a pursuit, so I pursued a career in education. I have a B.A. in Psychology and an M.A. in Political Science, with an emphasis in International Relations, both from CSU Chico.  I taught as a lecturer at Chico State in the Political Science Department for a few years, but still dreamed of being a lawyer.  For better or worse, I discovered the power of student loans and pursued my legal career, earning my J.D. from McGeorge School of Law.  I now practice family law with Mobo Law, LLP, a civil litigation firm based in Truckee with offices in Sacramento, to which I commuted daily for over 8 years.  This year, my firm agreed to open an office for me in Chico, and I am blessed to no longer be commuting.  I love what I do, I love being able to work locally, and I love having more time for my girls and to be able to give back to my community through organizations like Soroptimist!

Congratulations Shawn for being our member of the month for November!
Camp Fire Anniversary

Dear SI Chico,

It's hard to imagine a year has passed and the Camp Fire anniversary is upon us. As I have reflected with this milestone date approaching, I felt compelled to reach out to our membership. For myself, I feel a little lost as to how to properly or appropriately pay homage to the event. I don't feel like I belong in Paradise on November 8, since I didn't leave the ridge on that day. It also feels wrong to just go about my business as just another day in my life. Mostly in thinking this over, I realized that it's important to acknowledge the truth that we are all survivors of the Camp Fire at some level and give ourselves grace.

The fire changed so much in our community but also gave our club the chance to help like never before. I'm so very proud of everything we have accomplished in assistance and recovery and hope you all feel the same. I'm thankful that we are able to continue with our efforts through the Giving committee and ongoing projects. It's important to see the regrowth, the positive outcomes and look ahead to more of this in the future of SI Chico and our community. I read that there will be a remembrance event in City Plaza on Friday November 8 from 10:30-11:15. I plan to attend and invite all of you to join me, to remember together and to once again join hands as Soroptimist sisters, moving forward with giving hearts and a positive spirit. Let's meet at 10:15 on the corner of the Plaza across from Chico Paper.

Hope to see you there.

Wear your Soroptimist shirt if it feels right and comfortable to do so at the remembrance.

With Gratitude,

Bonnie

Now that we are going "spring-only" we
have turned our fall 5K into a Timed 5K Fundraiser to raise additional (and much-needed) funds for our scholarship fund.

It's only timed to make it "legit" - we are still encouraging all those who just want to come out and walk and run to join us. The colors are going to be at their peak in the park this weekend - hope that lures you if you are on the fence!

We hope to see some of you out there enjoying the gorgeous fall day with us.
Plus our signature Zumba warm up to kick us off right! Adults $30 / Children $15

The Live Your Dream online portals are open until November 15th.  We need your help to get the word out to possible applicants.  Do you know anyone in your circle of friends?  Do you know someone at your work that would qualify?

Thank you for your help,
