Message from President

Greetings Soroptimists!

What washes up on very small beaches?

Microwaves!

It was wonderful to be back together last Wednesday and I think we also enjoyed a low key version of Christmas in November. Thanks to Kathy and her team for putting the event together!

We continue to find great ways to be helpful in the community. Our Adopt-a-Family program is thriving and North Valley Community Foundation validated our efforts with a $24,000 grant. In the next few weeks, with a run up to Christmas we will be busy doing good works to try and make the season festive for those who have lost so much. Thanks for your work team!!

Don't forget to bring $25 this week and sign up for the bus tour of lights!

With Gratitude,

December Member of the Month

Hi! I'm Jeanne Smith,

Here's a little about me, I'm very social and like to think I'm open to most things, I love a challenge, but I really don't think of myself as competitive.

I was the first, last and middle child. That is I had a brother and sister 9 and 8 years older, and a brother 6 years younger. My parents were Catholic! I had a happy childhood! I was born in Torrance, CA and we moved to the City of Orange, in Orange County when I was 3. My family loved boating and camping, so that's how we spent many weekends and vacations as you can guess my friends and I spent as much time as possible at the beach!

I married at 17 and had a daughter, Cindy, just before my 18th  birthday, and then at 20, I had a son, Jason. In 1975 we moved to Paradise not long after, the marriage fell apart and I became a single mother. I went to work at Bank of America, the wages barely sustained us at first, and it was tough as child support was not enforced at that time. But I moved up at the Bank and money got better. When my kids were 17 and 15 my ex husband took his own life, which was emotionally hard on them especially Jason! However, because we then got his SSI, we were able to live better. The 3 of us moved to Chico in 1990 after they both graduated from high school.  Then the bank decided to close the facility I was working in, fortunately my kids were grown and on their own.   Read more.....
