Proposed Tax Cuts in Ontario's Budget

Small Business Tax Rate Reduction

As part of the 2026 Budget, the Ontario government is proposing to lower the small business tax rate from 3.2% to 2.2% starting July 1, 2026. This change would be adjusted if a business’s tax year crosses that date. Because business owners pay personal tax on dividends, the dividend tax credit will also be reduced starting January 1, 2027.

Tax Breaks for New Home Purchases

The government is taking steps to temporarily enhance the existing Ontario Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) New Housing Rebate and New Residential Rental Property Rebate to fully remove the 8 per cent provincial portion of the HST paid for qualifying new homes valued up to $1 million.

Simplifying and Reducing Taxes for Alcohol

The government is proposing to combine the basic, volumetric and environmental beer taxes into a single tax rate. The government is proposing changes to tax rates effective April 1, 2026, to align with the implementation of the new LCBO wholesale mark-up pricing structure.

Canada Hits Defence Spending Targets

Canada has now reached NATO’s 2% defence spending target bringing significant new investment into military infrastructure and communities across the country. As a key military community, continued investment in defence aligns with recent announcements of over 1,000 new housing units coming to Petawawa. On March 26th, Prime Minister Mark Carney said over the next decade Canada will spend half a trillion dollars in defence and defence related investment.

Gas Prices Continue to Rise Over Past Month

IMPACT TO AVERAGE DRIVER

Since the end of February, the price of regular led gasoline in Petawawa has climbed 41 cents a litre, an increase of 33%. For a driver putting 40 litres of gas in their vehicle that works out to an extra $17.20 at the pumps.

IMPACT TO COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVERS

The Canadian Truck Operators Association warns rising diesel prices, now exceeding $2.39 per litre in Toronto, are adding pressure to small carriers and independent operators. One CTOA member transporting essential goods says fuel costs have gone from $1,600 to $2,300 per truck, an increase in $700 every fill.
