Financial Relief for Small Businesses

Interest Rates Drop

Interest rates are on the decline. The Bank of Canada has reduced is policy rate by 50 basis points. For small businesses, this means lower costs for loans and could result in improved cash flow, offering opportunities for expansion or investment in new projects. Consumers may also benefit from reduced mortgage and loan payments, providing extra room in household budgets. The next rate announcement is December 11, 2024.

Credit Card Fees Declining

Starting in November 2024, small businesses will benefit from reduced credit card fees, thanks to a government agreement with Visa and MasterCard. Interchange fees will be lowered to an average of 0.95% which means on a $100 purchase, if a customer pays with a credit card, the retailer will get at least $99, where they previously would have kept as little as $97 in some cases. This means small businesses will retain more from each sale.
