A Message From Our President

Elizabeth Colón
NAWBO Chicago Board President
If January wasn’t the “Fresh Start” to 2021 you were expecting, that’s okay! The beauty of fresh starts is that we get to make them whenever we want, even if it’s a month after January. Any time is the right time, so find your “Fresh Start” and get started!
And here’s some more good news: it’s February, so we’re one step closer to Spring and warmer weather! Our theme this month is “Think Inclusive.” With everything going on in the world, especially in terms of diversity and inclusion, we challenge you to evaluate how you think about diversity.

Membership Insights: Think Inclusive
The theme for February is "Think Inclusive." How are you fostering diversity and inclusion in 2021?
|
|
|
Growing KDM into the uniquely diverse and inclusive company it is today wasn’t necessarily a distinct part of my business plan at the start. But with a very small talent pool available, we turned to more innovative recruitment efforts that attracted a diverse pool of applicants and implemented several internal policies and procedures to help foster a diverse and inclusive company culture.

Diversity and Inclusion is the bedrock of CKL Engineers, LLC. It starts with our culture. We foster it by celebrating and acknowledging diverse employees. We practice inclusion by having staff weigh in on projects the company chooses. We hold regular one on one meetings to get to know our employees, CKL makes sure that all staff have equal access to company trainings.

When Ashley Logan started in content marketing in 2012, content strategies were more focused on SEO-stuffing and obsessing over long-tail keywords than creating good content.
But Ashley knew there was a better way—through higher-quality journalistic articles and blog posts. Ashley left a successful career in commercial real estate to found Yakkety Yak, a full-service content marketing agency. It wasn’t easy to convince companies to get on board, but Ashley knew that she had to be willing to swim upstream and adopt new best practices to achieve the best results for her clients.

Planning from a Woman's Perspective
|
|
I’ve attended my share of wealth management conferences and it’s not uncommon to have a respected speaker deliver a message on establishing a niche market, including financial planning for women. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, just over half of the U.S. workforce is female. That’s a pretty big niche. However, many in the financial industry look past women or omit them from the planning process. That’s unfortunate, as women have some unique planning needs.
