Round Lake Business Spotlight

Every great business has a story and we’re here to share that with you. Meet the owners and teams behind Round Lake’s vibrant small business scene.

Asylum Skatepark is a sanctuary for all ages and skill levels.

Celebrating 15 years of business, open 6 months in Round Lake, Asylum Skatepark is continuing to grow! Building on their existing loyal customers, Aslyum continues to welcome new skaters of every skill level and preferred skating method.

Owner Jeff Coyners, a United States Air Force Veteran, looked to his passion to create a welcoming and inviting space for all skateboards, scooters, inline and roller skates, and bikes. All wheels are welcome to the ramps and bowls of Asylum Skatepark.

"Asylum Skatepark is welcoming to everybody with open arms, it doesn't work if you're not inviting everyone in"

-Owner Jeff Conyers

Aslyum has built a safe, third space where skaters can learn to skate without judgement. It is a family friendly environment for kids to practice skills and learn a new sport. It is a place encouraging of skill development.

What has been the most exciting moments for your business?

Highlights for Jeff include working with his mentor to host a 30 year old, worldwide event, Damn Am, in Chicagoland and a WGN feature in 'Around Town.'

There are classes and lessons for all ages but an emphasis on teaching first time skaters and kids how to skate. They want kids to come learn: from casual skateboarders to pros and maybe one day Olympians.

Skaters also have opportunities throughout the year to showcase their skills through competitions. Quarterly, Asylum has their own events or sponsors events in the area. They also try to add more opportunities and events to get new skaters into the park.

What would you tell someone thinking of trying skateboarding?

"Come in to any open session on Saturday or Sunday 9 am -10 pm! It is best to put your toes in the water and try it out. The first time is free!"

If someone has never skated before, not only are there classes available to learn, the Pro Shop at Asylum Skatepark has all the gear necessary to safely skate.

How did you decide the design of the Skate park?

The layout and design is to optimize flow for multiple tricks. The wall art was completed by local artists who donated their time and had free rein to design. The graffiti look brings the warehouse to life.

How have clients changed with the move?

Regulars have followed to the new location and come 3 times a week. The customer base has continued to grow, people continue to show up. People visit the park from states away. Local kids will be dropped off at 10 am and will not leave until 10 pm.

Asylum Skatepark offers deals on camps, running all holidays and breaks from school. They also offer memberships and season passes. Stop in and learn about passes or classes. And don't forget to visit the Pro Shop for all the skateboarding essentials!
