Message from the General Manager
It has been a tremendous 2 years at the Dufferin Board of Trade (DBOT) under the leadership of our Chair, Joe Andrews. I would like to take this opportunity in our transition period to thank Joe for his tireless contributions to this organization over his term as Chair. Joe has been an exceptional champion for DBOT and truly a pleasure to work with. The entire staff of the Dufferin Board of Trade look forward to working with Joe  in his new capacity as Past-Chair and the opportunities ahead.

I would also like to take this time to welcome Pete Renshaw as our new Chair (to be confirmed by the membership at the AGM on May 17th). We look forward to working with Pete throughout his term to build on the work already being done by DBOT as well as to explore new exciting opportunities for this organization. You can look forward to regularly hearing from Pete on various happenings in the upcoming releases of the Business in the County newsletter where he will be contributing the Chairpersons' Message Section.

I encourage you, our proud members, to attend the Annual General Meeting on May 17th, to have your say, learn more about your Board of Trade, and of course to network and dine on some delicious eats!

Diana Morris, General Manager

5 Minutes for Business A Big Boost to Business Investment  Canadian chamber logo

This brief from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce addresses the Crown's constitutional duty to consult with and accommodate Indigenous peoples whose rights could be affected through infrastructural developments.

Canada's businesses are optimistic about increasing investments this year, but there is a big barrier that needs to be addressed.

Before any development project, such as a mine or road can begin, the Crown has a constitutional duty to consult with and accommodate Indigenous peoples whose rights could be affected. Governments often rely on industry to do these consultations as part of the regulatory approval process. But there is often no guidance on how business should engage with Indigenous communities, or what constitutes appropriate consultations.

Provincial
Ontario's Fair Housing Plan

On Thursday April 20th 2017 the Ontario Government introduced the  Fair Housing Plan . This set of 16 comprehensive measures is intended to help people find an affordable place to call home, while bringing stability to the real estate market and protecting the investment of homeowners.

The Dufferin Board of Trade and Ontario Chamber of Commerce  are encouraged to see that the government has committed to working with municipalities to remove the barriers to getting more new homes and listings on the market faster. While we acknowledge that the government is taking action to ensure affordability, we believe that measures should target increasing supply and protecting landlords while encouraging new opportunities for growth. We encourage the province to keep a close eye on what impact these new policy measures will have on housing supply going forward.
