The DBOT Board of Directors was pleased to receive the Organizational Sustainability Report on January 23rd from Professor Sheldon Leiba of the Humber College Business School. The Board will meet to discuss the report further and to create a strategic action plan to align our resources to ensure our organization is responsive to the needs of our community and delivers highly effective programs and services.

DBOT recently undertook two strategic initiatives that received support from Orangeville Council which included funding for a new Skilled Trades in Dufferin initiative and a local Film and Television Office . We look forward to working with the community to drive these initiatives forward with a high degree of success.

Humber College Business School Delivers Organizational Sustainability Report for the Dufferin Board of Trade
Dufferin ON: On Wednesday, January 23rd Professor Sheldon Leiba of the Humber College Business School, presented the Dufferin Board of Trade Board of Directors with an organizational stability report. The Dufferin Board of Trade (DBOT) and Humber College Business School partnered from September to December 2018 to develop an Organizational Sustainability Report for DBOT to maintain the business association’s relevancy and impact in an increasingly complex, challenging, and ever-changing environment.

The Report outlines strategic priorities for the organization with SMART objectives (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound) related to eight key strategic areas.

Founded as the Orangeville Board of Trade in 1909, DBOT has remained a non-profit, membership organization supporting business in Dufferin County and is celebrating its 110th anniversary year.

DBOT will utilize the Organizational report to create a plan to focus its resources to those activities that offer high impact for business community and best ensures that the organization maximizes its leadership role for and on behalf of business in Dufferin.

“The report presented to us today was bold and ambitious.” Pete Renshaw, Chair of DBOT, said. “I am confident that the organization is strong in its foundation and has the support of this community to help us execute an efficacy-driven plan to ensure that the Board of Trade remains the strongest resource and connector for business in Dufferin.

Provincial Advocacy Wins
On January 15, the Ontario Chamber of Commerce (OCC)with support from The Dufferin Board of Trade and the Chamber network of Ontario provided the Government of Ontario with thirteen tangible recommendations for the upcoming provincial budget to build a stronger Ontario and create a business climate which encourages growth.

The OCC presented the submission to the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs, calling on the government to prioritize small business tax reforms, strategic infrastructure investment, and value-based procurement in Budget 2019.

In an OCC survey last year, 48 percent of Ontario businesses indicated they were not confident about the province’s economic outlook and 61 percent of these cited high tax rates as a reason. As the province heads into a time of economic uncertainty coupled with the province’s staggering deficit, the submission calls on the government to focus on fiscally sustainable and long-term taxation priorities. Currently, business with an income of less than $500,000 are taxed at a flat rate. To create an environment which encourages small and medium business to successfully scale, the OCC recommends the government create a variable small business deduction in Budget 2019.
