The Dufferin Women in Business Celebrate
the Sparkle in Dufferin
The Dufferin Women in Business, a committee of the Dufferin Board of Trade, gathered to celebrate the winners of the 2018 Sparkle Awards at the Monora Park Pavilion in Mono. A total of four awards were presented to the deserving recipients.

The Dufferin Women in Business are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 Sparkle Awards:

Volunteer of the Year…………………..Karen Ross-Smith
Networker of the Year………………….Victoria Johansen
Mentor of the Year.……………………..Diana Morris
2018 Woman of Influence……………..Brenda Seltzer

The Sparkle Award nominations opened in early October and the recipients were selected through a balloted voting process that took place at the Gala. Nominees provided a short bio and photo speaking to their accomplishments. The biographies were posted online in preparation of the vote at the Gala and available at the event on printed booklets.

The evening provided an opportunity to celebrate high achieving and influential women in Dufferin County, and allowed for attendees to network and build connections. The Sparkle Awards mark the Dufferin Women in Business’ premier networking event of the year; over 110 guests attended the Gala.

“It is truly an honour for our committee to present these distinguished awards to outstanding women in our business community,” Liz Skorski, Chair of the Dufferin Women in Business Committee, said. “Each nominee should be very proud of their accomplishments, and I extend my sincere congratulations to all our award winners.”

The Gala began with a networking cocktail reception with music provided by local musicians, Sara Rose and Ryan Avery. A locally inspired four course dinner prepared by Lavender Blue was served with the awards ceremony immediately following. Attendees were addressed by the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services, to open the awards ceremony.

Provincial Business Update
Making Ontario Open for Business Act Receives Royal Assent

The Dufferin Board of Trade and Ontario Chamber Network is pleased the Government of Ontario is holding strong in its commitment to make Ontario open for business.

We applaud the government for taking swift action to introduce many critical reforms that we have persistently advocated for on behalf of Dufferin business.

What do these changes mean for business?

1.   Minimum wage paused at $14 per hour.
2.   Partial repeal of scheduling provisions.
3.   Removal of equal pay for equal work.
4.   Returning to previous calculation of public holiday pay.
5.   Return to previous union certification policies.
6.   Amended personal emergency leave.
7.   Maintain domestic or sexual violence leave.
8.   Maintain paid vacation expansion.
9.   Apprenticeship ratios set at 1:1.
10.   Dissolution of the Ontario College of Trades.

Federal Business Update
Federal Fall Economic Update Seeks to Address Canada's Competitiveness Gap
On November 21, the Government of Canada released its 2018 Fall Economic
Statement entitled “Investing in Middle Class Jobs”, which provides an update on the government’s finances and announces commitments to improve Canada’s
competitiveness.

The government is projecting steady, moderate growth in Canada’s economy, with real GDP forecasted to rise by 2 percent in 2018. The Fall Economic Statement
forecasts a deficit of $18.1 billion in 2018-19, down by $0.9 billion from the previous
year. Growth is expected to be more modest over the next four years due to limited economic capacity, higher interest rates, and slowing US growth.

The government has taken steps in the right direction with faster write-offs for new investment, regulatory reform and concrete actions to accelerate the removal of barriers to trade within Canada.

We remain committed to working with the government to bring forward a commitment to a full review of our tax system or set out a clear, realistic strategy for balancing the public books.
