President's Message
Businesses may face new financial challenges from choices the Delaware General Assembly may make this session. Among them are:

  • A developing proposal that would require paying for extended leave for more employers than are presently required under the FMLA (headcount is undetermined)
  • An increase in the minimum wage to $15 per hour
  • Legalization of recreational marijuana
  • Higher environmental fees for small businesses like dry cleaners, construction companies, and more

A Busy Week for Policy in Dover
This week saw a number of bills heard in committees important to the business community:

PASSED FROM COMMITTEE:
  • HB16, expanding Delaware’s Earned Income Tax Credit
  • HB88, which removes the youth and training wage
  • HB150, legalizing recreational marijuana
  • SB65, creates a $9,000 credit towards skills training for recent high school graduates

DEFEATED IN COMMITTEE:
  • HB64, a bill to create higher personal income brackets

2021 ECONOMIC OUTLOOK
WITH PATRICK HARKER

Patrick Harker, president & chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia will provide a regional economic outlook with a focus on Delaware’s economy. Harker will also take a deep dive on key industries, including financial services, agricultural, hospitality, healthcare, construction and incorporation services.

2020 Superstars in Education
Honored with Surprise Grants
From overcoming language barriers to fostering social emotion learning to readying high school students to enter the workforce, Delaware is home to innovative approaches to education that are worth celebrating. Last May the State Chamber was unable to hold its annual Superstars in Education awards ceremony due to the pandemic. Instead, the State Chamber recently took the celebration to each school for a small, in-person award presentation and banner hanging. Each school also received a surprise $1,000 grant from The Partnership, Inc. to expand their program. Read more >
