A Musical Road Trip - Joey Rumberger and Ray Adams (Pt. 1) | |
It will be a show and tell event at First Baptist Church, Vero Beach, this weekend. Joseph (Joey) Rumberger, a senior at Indian River Charter High School, spent part of his summer school break at the NoordBroek Organ Academy in the Netherlands and northern Germany with his organ teacher, Ray Adams.
From Joey:
I was invited this past June to attend the 2023 Noordbroek Organ Academy, an annual, hand-picked group of approximately 8-10 organists from around the world, headquartered in the village of Noordbroek, Groningen, in the Netherlands. The academy is headed by renowned Dutch organist Peter Westerbrink and Dr. Christiaan Teeuwsen, professor of organ at Redeemer College in Ontario, and is open to anyone, from organ students in school to seasoned professionals. Participants spend about one week in the province of Groningen and the northern area of Germany, seeking, hearing, and playing historic pipe organs by the renowned organ builder Arp Schnitger and his pupils. The goal is for participants to not only have a chance to play these iconic and revered instruments, but to achieve a higher understanding and appreciation for the early music that inspired well-known composers like Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frederic Handel.
As the youngest-ever attendee (having just finished my junior year of high school), I learned so many things that have already improved my organ playing and appreciation for music as a whole, and I was privileged to experience a taste of Dutch and German culture on a first-hand basis. Likewise, I was honored to have the chance to study under professionals of such caliber as Peter and Dr. Teeuwsen, who not only are incredibly pleasurable and knowledgeable, but have dedicated their lives to this line of work. Each day was just as exciting as the previous, full of new organs, new ideas, and new experiences at every turn. I feel doubly as fortunate to have had this experience before college, as this was a chance to decide if I really wanted to spend my life eating, sleeping, and breathing music (surprise, I do!) and I cannot wait to return for the 2024 symposium next June--another uncommon invitation that I was incredibly honored and elated to have extended to me personally.
| |
Joey's organ teacher, Ray Adams, talks about this memorable trip. "What an experience for
the two of us," he said. "Joseph was the youngest
organist ever invited to this event." This was Adams second time at the academy.
"All the participants received individual
private and group lessons with Peeter Westerbrink,
the organist at both the Aa Kerk in Groningen and
the famous Schnitger organ at Noordbroek, and Dr.
Christian Teeuwsen of Redeemer College in
Ancaster, Canada." After a week of intensive study, the students ended with a concert on the famous Schnitger organ at NoordBroek.
Adams said, "The morning classes were held on
the 1696 Arp Schnitger organ, and for the afternoons, we traveled to other significant
instruments in the surrounding area. Many of these instruments were maintained in their original tuning/ temperaments. As they say, there is no substitute for playing music on the instruments of the same era.
"As a follow-up for thanking many of the local people who financially supported Joseph to attend this Academy, we will present a concert using the large sanctuary screen to show videos of us
playing many of these instruments. Afterward, we will demonstrate how we use our newfound
knowledge to adapt the music to instruments of our modern time. If anyone is interested in attending this Academy next year, please contact me, and I can give you the audition/interview information. "
Adams retired in 2021 from the Indian River Charter High School, Schumann School for the Visual and Performing Arts, the Vero Beach Choral Society, and Academy for the Performing Arts. He served as Director of Music/Organist at the Community Church of Vero Beach for nineteen years from 1983-2002.

Riverside Theatre, led by Producing Artistic Director/CEO Allen D. Cornell and Managing Director/COO Jon R. Moses, begins its 51st season celebrating an electrifying night of early rock ‘n roll with Million Dollar Quartet. Sponsored by Riverside Theatre’s Patron Producers Group, Million Dollar Quartet plays the Stark Stage at Riverside Theatre from October 24 – November 12, 2023.
The Story:
On December 4, 1956, Carl Perkins, famous for the song “Blue Suede Shoes,” was recording at Sun Records in Memphis. His pianist was the then unknown but already brilliant Jerry Lee Lewis, who had just started working at Sun. Before the two artists had finished their recording, Elvis Presley dropped by to see his friend Sam Phillips, who ran Sun Records. He was accompanied by a Las Vegas dancer who was visiting him.
...
Elvis thought Perkins and Lewis sounded great, so he joined them for an impromptu jam session. Then Johnny Cash arrived. He dropped by the studio to talk about his recording contract with Mr. Phillips and joined in as well. The four artists were having a great time singing gospel and traditional songs and recent popular hits .... Sam Phillips recognizing the publicity value of the session, called the Memphis Press-Scimitar to have them write and photograph the event. A resulting article appeared the following day under the headline “Million Dollar Quartet.”
The sound engineer working that day was so impressed by the great music of this unique quartet that he set up mics and started recording. The recordings were electrifying, but couldn’t be sold since Elvis was now under contract to RCA. When Sun Records was sold in 1969, the tapes were licensed and catalogued in Europe and in 1981, 17 of the 47 tracks were released there. A few years later, more tracks were found and released under the title, The Complete Million Dollar Quartet Session. In 1990, the recordings were released in the United States as Elvis Presley – The Million Dollar Quartet.

Bicycles:
Technology That Changed the World
From the Flagler Museum:
The Flagler Museum’s fall exhibition, Bicycles: Technology that Changed the World, highlights the development and evolution of the bicycle and the profound impact bicycles had on American society and culture.
Bicycles emerged during the Gilded Age as a revolutionary means of transportation and leisure, allowing individuals to move freely and easily, without the burden and expenses associated with acquiring and maintaining horse and carriage.
At its peak, in a single year, the bicycle revolution in the United States resulted in nearly three hundred companies producing more than a million bicycles, making it one of the Nation’s largest industries. From the earliest prototypes of the 1860s to the sophisticated designs of the 1890s, the Flagler Museum’s fall exhibition offers an unparalleled opportunity to see many rare examples of early bicycles and to understand their tremendous impact on American society and culture during the Gilded Age.
On View through December 17
