Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos - Day of the Dead - October 29 to November 5, 2016

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico:  89°/32°

Adios Summer!  Hola Winter in Vallarta!  Is it cold where you are yet?  Start planning your next visit to Vallarta to get away from frigid temps.

One of our absolute favorite holidays of the year welcomes visitors from all over the world to Mexico as northern temperatures dip down to boots, gloves, hats and coat weather.  Vallarta weather changes from hot, rainy, and tropical to warm days and pleasant nights.

The annual Day of the Dead - Dia de Los Muertos - celebrations start on Saturday October 29 and continue through Saturday, November 5 in various locations throughout the city ranging from the main plaza in front of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, streets in La Colonia Emiliano Zapata, the 5 de Diciembre Cemetery, the Arcos at the Malecon, the Los Mangos Library, and all your favorite bars and restaurants.

The Cempaxóchitl flower (marigold) decorates much of the Day of the Dead altars exhibited throughout Mexico and represents a Mayan legend of how it came to embody the holiday.

Xochitl and Huitzilin, a young Mayan couple, loved each other since they were children.  They grew up together and so did their love. Every afternoon, they would both rise to the top of the mountain to take flowers to Tonatiuh, the father sun. Tonatiuh was pleased with the two lovers and he smiled at their daily offerings of love.  The two lovers swore they would love each other beyond time, beyond distance, and even beyond death.

But one day the war came and the lovers were separated. Soon came the news that Huitzilin had died in the war. Xochitl felt her heart was torn apart with pain.  She went up the mountain and asked Tonatiuh, the father sun, to be joined forever with her love.

The father sun was moved by the emotion of the devastated Huitzilin.  The sun extended one of its rays and touched the girl and made her into a flower with colors as intense as the sun.

Then came Huitzilin in the form of a hummingbird, and lovingly landed in the center of the flower. Instantly, the flower opened with 20 petals with an intense and mysterious aroma.

This Mayan legend of how the cempazochitl flower, the flower of love, the flower of the dead, came to be embraces a very Mexican way of thinking: love never dies.
