LIVE UNITED

URGENT NEEDS GRANTS

Girls on the Run Today's girls are exposed to longstanding gender stereotypes, societal obstacles, and cultural challenges that can be detrimental to their emotional and physical health. Girls on the Run's programs impact at a critical age when confidence and physical activity decline. They inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using fun, experience-based curricula integrating running. Their curriculum and volunteer coaches emphasize developing competence, confidence, connection, character, and contribution in young girls through lessons that incorporate physical activity, a service project, and a celebratory 5K event. United Way Washington County is proud to award $1980.00 to help support scholarships for twelve young ladies at Eastern Elementary School!

Hagerstown Housing Authority - When two elderly residents of a local high-rise were facing difficulties, Hagerstown Housing Authority's Director of Resident Services, Dianne Rudisill, reached out to United Way for help. We were able to award $2000.00 so the two vulnerable seniors can continue living independently in their homes through the Live United Urgent Needs grant.

Each month the United Way of Washington County is pleased to partner

with two organizations providing critical services to our community!

United Against Hunger

Grant Awards

The Hope Center - Since 1955 the mission of The Hope Center at Hagerstown Rescue Mission has been to offer help for today and hope for tomorrow by providing programs and services to meet the physical and spiritual needs of men, women, and children. Primarily known as a shelter for men experiencing homelessness, The Hope Center provides many other valuable services to the community. Free lunch and evening meals are available to anyone needing something to eat seven days a week. Every season they host a sizeable free grocery giveaway where individuals and families can come and stock up on essential non-perishable items for their pantries and host an annual Thanksgiving feast that is open to the public. Their Wildside Youth after-school program and Camp Wild summer camp feed hundreds of kids for free throughout the year. They currently have less than twenty tables for these events, which play an essential part in their food programs. Through the United Against Hunger grant, The Hope Center will be able to purchase new tables to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community.

The End of Emergency SNAP Benefits

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a federal program that provides nutrition benefits to low-income individuals and families that are used at stores to purchase food. The program has evolved from what was commonly known as the "food stamps program" and is administered by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) through it's nationwide network of FNS field offices.

SNAP is designed to assist families whose household incomes are $23,000 or less a year. Local FNS field offices are responsible for the licensing and monitoring of retail food stores participating in SNAP. Other programs administered by the FNS include WIC, or the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

Out of School Time - Boys & Girls Club

“T” is currently a member of the PA Ave Boys & Girls Club After School Program, but has also attended our Elgin Station summer camp. The beginning of this school year was rough for “T”. He was in a new location and didn’t know a lot of the kids. Staff had to continuously encourage him to participate in the programs and club wide activities, and majority of the time he declined. His behavior was not the best and had to be consistently reminded of the rules while at Club. He was very quiet and reserved- didn’t want to be bothered by Staff or other members other than his sister.

The club staff met to determine what could be done to ensure that "T" enjoyed his time spent here and agreed that he should be enrolled in our mentoring program. After meeting with him for a few weeks, a major difference in his behavior and attitude was apparent. Through the relationship-building that comes through mentoring, we were able to determine his interests, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses. With this knowledge, we developed programs that would not only grab his interest, but also the other kids that were having issues as well. At that time, we began to see a HUGE change in “T”’s attitude, it was a complete 360 turnaround! He started volunteering to help staff with programs, he wasn’t having conflicts with other members or staff, his behavior was being rewarded instead of reprimanded. “T” eventually received Student of The Week! He was very excited to receive the award and was reminded that positive behavior is rewarded at The Club. We love the change that we have seen in “T” within the past few months and we hope to continue to see the positive change within him as the school year continues!

BEVERLY MCDANIEL JOINS VALOREXCEL TO EXPAND WORKPLACE CHAPLAIN PROGRAM

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD – ValorExcel is pleased to announce the addition of Beverly McDaniel to their team as a workplace chaplain. A workplace chaplain offers workplace ministry to a business's employees. Activities may include offering life coaching, helping mediate employee conflicts, and offering wellness or life-skills training. Chaplains focus on assisting employees during crises by providing one-on-one sessions and offering referrals to other professionals when necessary.

"Most employers recognize that absenteeism and turnover can create a high cost to their business," said Lori Wriston, CEO of ValorExcel. "An employee focused on a personal problem rather than their work is sometimes the cause of expensive errors or accidents. An on-site chaplain often facilitates the identification of a concern and its early resolution. The benefits include lower turnover rates, increased job satisfaction, higher employee productivity, and more."

The cost for ValorExcel's Workplace Chaplain Program varies based on the organization's budget, location, number of employees, and add-on services. To learn more about how you can help your employees who bring their problems to work, visit www.valorexcel.com/chaplains or call 240-329-9387 or email info@valorexcel.com.
