Greetings,
DID YOU KNOW that two new studies laud the efficacy of collagen?
The first study from Nutrition Journal, double-blind placebo-controlled, found that collagen supplementation supports certain aspects of joint health in people who experience joint discomfort after exercise, including improvements in joint function, discomfort and their impact on quality of life?
The second study, from Aesthetic Surgery Journal, found that collagen supplementation demonstrates consistent and clinically meaningful benefits for dermal, bone, and muscular health.

We are exposed to many endemic viruses including SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), norovirus (stomach flu), adenovirus (common cold), monkeypox, and four other coronaviruses (common cold), among others. Support your immune system with our Free Prevent and Fight Infection 3.0 Protocol here. | | Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online | On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. Recent analyses of methyl vitamin B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. Only 14 of 35 oregano oil brands met label claim. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Steve: For decades, body mass index (BMI) - calculated simply from your height and weight - has been the standard tool for determining whether someone is at a healthy weight. But a new study from Nutrients is adding serious evidence to a growing concern we have known for a while now: BMI may be getting it wrong for a lot of people.
When researchers measured body fat directly using DXA scanning - considered the gold standard for body composition assessment - they found that more than one-third of adults were placed in the wrong weight category by BMI. Most striking was the overweight category, where over half of those labeled overweight by BMI actually fell into a different category when body fat was measured directly - three quarters of them landing in the normal weight range entirely.
The core problem with BMI is that it measures mass, not fat. It can't distinguish between muscle, bone, fat, and water - and it has no way of knowing where fat is stored in the body. A muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight will receive the same BMI score, despite having dramatically different health profiles. This matters because it's not just how much fat you carry - it's where you carry it.
Fat stored around the abdomen and surrounding internal organs, known as visceral fat, is far more metabolically dangerous than fat stored beneath the skin, and BMI is blind to this distinction entirely. Fortunately, there are better tools available.
- DXA scanning provides the most precise picture of body composition but isn't always accessible.
- Waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio, which are among the strongest predictors of metabolic disease risk and require nothing more than a tape measure. A waist-to-height ratio above 0.5 - meaning your waist is more than half your height - is a well-validated marker of elevated cardiovascular and metabolic risk.
- Body fat percentage measured by bioelectrical impedance (available in many clinical and consumer scales) offers another layer of information.
- Skinfold measurements taken by a trained clinician, and DEXA-based body composition panels now offered through many functional medicine practices, round out the toolkit for those who want a more complete picture.
The takeaway is that relying on BMI alone can lead to misclassification. The most simple, accurate assessment is waist-to-height ratio along with metabolic markers in blood work.
