Greetings!
Unfortunately, I have to start off this month's newsletter with some bad news. For those of you who haven't read my blog, I was involved in a riding accident at the end of June that resulted in multiple fractures. That, combined with a subsequent diagnosis of pulmonary embolisms, will keep me out of the saddle for the remainder of the year. Not exactly the news that a horse professional wants to hear, but instead of being down about it, I've decided to learn to make lemonade out of the lemons that the accident has handed me! While being grounded isn't ideal, I'm here, alive, recovering and wanting to work! My plan for the fall is to pursue different aspects of my business since I will not be competing. You'll still see me at competitions with students, but most of my personal horses will be on vacation. As you all know, my primary business is sales and that will continue. We were lucky to have Anna Graves join us for the summer to help with riding. Anna is off to Virginia soon, so we are currently interviewing for a new full-time rider/assistant. Check out our ad on Yard & Groom for a full job description. We are still accepting horses in for training and consignment, and I will be training them from the ground daily. We've been successful in this process thus far, and have sold multiple horses already during my rehab. Along with the consignment horses, I will also be acting as an agent for people looking to purchase horses. I will be sourcing horses both nationally and internationally from young green horses to Advanced horses.. I will also be available for clinics, lessons and Skype/YouTube lessons. So if you would like to set something up, please let me know. For a more detailed report of the accident and the recovery plan, visit my blog. Until next time, Courtney and Neal |

Before the accident, we were able to get to two competitions in June. We started at hometown event Plantation Field Horse Trials in Unionville on June 9-10. Courtney brought both Who's A Star ("Tag") and R Star ("Hope") at Preliminary. This was Tag's first complete event since returning to competition following his colic surgery in January. He was quite impressive all day, starting off the day with a 21.4 in dressage. He then jumped cleanly all day to win the Open Preliminary division. Go Tag!
Hope, who was in the same division, was just a few points behind her older brother all day. She scored a 26.8 in dressage and only added a little time on cross country to that score to finish 2nd behind Tag.

The next weekend we were off to Seneca Valley Pony Club Horse Trials in Poolesville, Maryland. It's a bit of a hike from the farm, but always worth the drive. Tag was competing in his first Intermediate since his colic surgery, and was more than thrilled to be jumping the big stuff again! He started the day in 3rd place after dressage, and with the ground being fairly hard, Courtney took her time on cross country to add some time to the score. But their score was good enough to hold onto their 3rd place. Hope had a similar day at Preliminary, but ended her day in 2nd place.

Clinics & Lessons with Courtney
|
Courtney has gotten the okay to start traveling, and will be available for clinics around the country. She is a great teacher who is demanding but fair and her students learn a great deal. Her primary focus is helping the riders reach their goals by getting the most out of them and their horses. To learn more about scheduling a clinic at your farm, or if you want to trailer in to our place, contact Courtney directly at csquarefarm@gmail.com.

My tip this month is about enjoying every day. WIth our busy lives, Facebook, Twitter, emails, texts, etc. it's sometimes hard to focus on today and the moments that take place today. WIth my injury, I have been spending quite a lot of time reading through things and two comics pages illustrate this: One was a New Yorker piece showing a scene at someone's home with six people looking at their phones and the caption read, "I invited my friends over so they could play on their phones." The other comic was of Pooh and Piglet taking a walk holding hands and Pooh says, "What day is it?" "It's today," squeaked Piglet. "My favorite day," said Pooh. So here is to you making today your favorite day.
