CA COASTAL COMMISSION JUNE 10, 2026, AGENDA ITEM

5-19-0971-A1 (Dana Point Harbor Partners)

Dear Dana Point Boater,

CA COASTAL COMMISSION JUNE 10, 2026, AGENDA ITEM

5-19-0971-A1 (Dana Point Harbor Partners)

At the June 10th meeting of the CA Coastal Commission, the Commission will review an amendment to the Coastal Development Permit (CDP) for Dana Point Marina.

Since construction of the new marina started, many boaters have voiced concerns questioning the compliance of the revitalized marina with the Coastal Development Permit. Your Dana Point Boaters Association has been working with the Coastal Commission over the past several years to confirm compliance.

One of the reasons for the amendment to the CDP is that some smaller slips were not built as approved by the CDP. In addition, some large end ties which were in the marina slip mix matrix for use by two smaller vessels are currently being used for one larger vessel. The amendment is to rectify the issue.

The amendment will reduce the number of slips for vessels between 28-58 feet by 46, and increase the number of slips for 65-foot vessels by 22. Slips for 15- foot vessels will increase by 45. It will also authorize flexible operational use of certain marina end ties, which may accommodate either separate smaller vessels (30 to 35 feet) or a single larger vessel (65 feet).

We encourage all boaters to submit written comments by 5 p.m. on Friday using the following link and clicking the "Submit Comment" at the end of Item 14: https://coastal.ca.gov/meetings/agenda/#/2026/6.

While it is good news that the Coastal Commission is addressing the non-compliance issue, we feel it is important for boaters to voice their concerns. We encourage you to let the Commission know your thoughts.

Questions to ponder:

  • Do you agree with the reduction in slips for vessels from 28 to 58 feet?
  • Do you agree in the increase of slips for 65-foot vessels?
  • Do you like the idea of the addition of 45 new 15' side ties?
  • Is it in the spirit of the Coastal Development Permit to allow the marina to have authority for the flexible use of the end ties in a marina designated as a recreational small craft and boat harbor?
  • Does flexible use of the end ties skew the slip mix matrix and increase the probability of not being able to determine proper compliance?

Please let the CA Commission know if you like the amendments or if they need to be tweaked.

If you so desire, you can address the Commission during public comments by submitting a speaker request.
