The California State Budget for FY 2020-21 was signed into law last week and with that was the authorization for the Department of Finance to allocate $500 million directly to cities to cover expenses related to public health and public safety impacts of COVID-19.

The National League of Cities released its annual report examining mayoral state of the city speeches delivered January through April. Five California cities are sited in the report including Long Beach, San Marcos, Riverside, Los Angeles, and San Francisco

The Assembly was scheduled to return July 13 from its summer recess. However, it was announced July 6 that due to Assembly staff and a lawmaker testing positive for COVID-19, the Assembly and Senate will delay their return and adjust committee hearing schedules. The Legislature must adjourn by Aug. 31, so this will create additional pressure on the Legislature’s schedule to conduct its business. The League will continue to provide updates as received.

The Office of the Attorney General recently announced grant funding availability through the California Department of Justice Tobacco Grant Program. A total of $28.5 million in funding is available for FY 2020-21 and any local public agency throughout the state that has authority to enforce tobacco-related state laws or local ordinances is eligible to apply. The grants are being used to combat the illegal sale of tobacco and cigarette products to minors.
