Last Thursday evening, just hours before the midnight deadline, Governor Baker vetoed An Act Creating a Next-Generation Roadmap for Massachusetts Climate Policy.
We are disappointed that Governor Baker vetoed this path-breaking climate bill that included a suite of strong policies to address climate change along with needed environmental justice protections.

Debunking Baker’s 6 reasons for climate veto
Lawmakers should ignore governor's calls for doing less
By Craig S. Altemose, CommonWealth, January 18, 2021
ON THURSDAY, Gov. Charlie Baker announced he would veto the Next Generation Road Map climate bill, a bill that would take a big step forward in advancing Massachusetts’ response to a public health emergency.
Since his first failed run for governor as a climate denier, Baker has generally positioned himself as someone who is pro-climate action. And indeed, his administration just released an updated climate action plan that has much in it to celebrate.
Yet Baker’s decision to veto the bill seems incongruous (to put it politely) with his supposed aspirations for climate leadership, and his stated rationale, detailed below, is not persuasive. Read more here.

Questions on Baker’s $6b climate change cost estimate
Barrett, CLF’s Campbell say governor’s veto letter not convincing
By Bruce Mohl, CommonWealth,
January 19, 2021
The Senate’s point person on climate change legislation said he doesn’t know where Gov. Charlie Baker came up with his estimate that the Legislature’s target for emissions reductions in 2030 would cost state residents an extra $6 billion.
“Boy, would I like to know,” said Sen. Michael Barrett of Lexington. “I have never – and I am familiar with all of the written documents the administration has released on this topic – I had never seen that $6 billion figure until [Thursday]. I wonder if the governor had ever seen the $6 billion figure until [Thursday].” Read more here.

Female scientists focus on a secret weapon to fight climate change: Moms
A new group of parent scientists is launching Science Moms, a $10 million educational campaign to engage other mothers
By Sarah Kaplan, The Washington Post, January 12, 2021
“What world have I brought my child into?” the new mom pleaded. “What can I do to make sure my baby isn’t brought up in a world that’s being destroyed?”
It was 2019, and climate researcher Katharine Hayhoe was at a church breakfast in Fairbanks, Alaska, when a young woman tapped on her shoulder and confessed that she was terrified. Ever since the birth of her daughter, the young woman said, she couldn’t stop worrying about the threat of a rapidly warming planet.
“That heartfelt question is one I thought I could only really answer as a fellow mom,” said Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech University and an evangelical Christian who has spent years trying to educate the public about climate change. Read more here.

When Greta Thunberg met the Dalai Lama
By Shana Rappaport, Green Biz, January 14, 2021
One of the world's most recognizable individuals, a global leader to millions, whose spirit and vision has inspired countless followers across generations — recently met the Dalai Lama.
That’s why I tuned in live over the weekend to a conversation between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and young climate activist Greta Thunberg, who were joined by two leading climate scientists for a discussion titled "The Crisis of Climate Feedback Loops."
The wisdom that emerged from a rather iconic convergence of science and spirituality is as simple as it is profound, and their collective call to action too clear and compelling to ignore — especially for those of us committed to accelerating a clean economy and ensuring a future for life on earth that works for all.
