Fernando Mallory, MSW, CATC IV

I was born in Macau, which is China today, about 60 years ago. I grew up there with the Jesuit Priests at an all-boys school. At 14 years of age I was adopted by a couple and brought to the U.S. I was raised in Long Beach, California, which I proudly call my hometown. At 19 I moved into my own apartment in downtown Long Beach. At that time, I began working as a banquet waiter in the Non-Commissioned Officers Club on Terminal Island where I was employed for several years.
During my 20s and 30s I experimented with and became dependent on alcohol and other substances. By 38, I had finally hit a roadblock. I wanted and found sobriety in the rooms of 12 Step groups. I celebrated 26 years of recovery on May 11 th , 2019.

Maker of Oxycontin Files for Bankruptcy – But It’s Still Not A Win For The Opioid Crisis.
09-19-19 | BY  TORI SKENE
Earlier this week, Purdue Pharma, the maker of Oxycontin, filed for bankruptcy. The same day the company also negotiated a multi-billion dollar settlement to resolve thousands of lawsuits – mostly involving their role in the opioid crisis.
While this may sound like positive news for those who have followed along in the  Purdue Pharma saga , it’s not as great as it seems.
The company initially stated that they planned to provide $10-$12 billion to help reimburse state and local governments and clean up the damage done by prescription painkillers and opioids. However, today, Purdue not only asked U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain to pause for nine months more than 2,600 lawsuits against the company, but additionally asked him to shield the founders of Purdue Pharma from related opioid lawsuits they face.
We Need Harm Reduction for All Drugs, Not Just Opioids
By  Olivia Pennelle  09/30/19
While we've made great strides with harm reduction for people who use opioids, we're slow to provide non-abstinence-based treatment for people who use other drugs.
A quick glance at the news reveals the catastrophic effects of opioids across the nation: around 120 people a day die from opioid-related overdoses. It’s so devastating that the nation is calling it an opioid epidemic. Yet even as we watch this tragedy unfold, we’re missing the point.

It’s time to measure addiction recovery rates, not just addiction rates
By ROBERT D. ASHFORD, OLIVIA PENNELLE, and BRENT CANODEAUGUST 30, 2018
ost among the headlines of opioid addiction and overdose deaths are the many quiet stories of recovery. An estimated  22 million Americans  — that includes the three of us — are in recovery from opioid and other addictions. We say “estimated” because states and the federal government don’t track recovery like they track addiction rates or overdoses.
