I was born in 1935 in Cushing, Texas, as the youngest of five children. My father was referred to as a “dirt farmer” in East Texas. Jim Crow was in effect at that time; the dirt farmers who were mostly black relied on the merchants to provide them with seed and fertilizer to farm. The dirt farmers had to pay them back at harvest time and usually had nothing left in the way of cash.
In all school districts in the country, you had to have enough students to make a school. Land was purchased adjacent to our land for that purpose. When the township dropped off the building materials, they dropped them on my family’s property instead of the school’s property. The two-room school house was built on our property, contributing to the impression that it was my school.

Have You Heard?
Assembly Bill 575 was passed and signed into law, effective January 1, 2018 thanks to the leadership of CAADE and the hard work of Paula Lee, CAADE's representative in Sacramento. This bill makes addiction counselors mandated reporters for Elder and Dependent Adult abuse.
You may be thinking, "Weren't we already required to report elder abuse?" Yes, but only ethically. Now that we are both legally and ethically mandated reporters for child and elder abuse. We enjoy the legal protections that come along with being mandated reporters, including protection from lawsuits. CAADE is proud to have taken another step forward in making addiction counseling on par with other helping professions.

Gary Knepper, one of the CAADE’s most valued members, grew up in Clovis, California, with two older sisters and one older brother. He retired from the Coast Guards in 1974 due to an injury. Not ready to embrace the retirement lifestyle, he decided to purchase a bar in Fresno, where he went on to become his own best customer. Fortunately, Gary was given the gift of sobriety in 1993. In 1999 he enrolled at Fresno City college where he completed his alcohol and drug studies program and became a certified counselor in 2001. After earning his credential, he continued his education and earned his associate degree in 2002 prior to beginning his employment at WestCare Foundation in Fresno, California.
Gary began volunteering at the CAADE Conferences in 2006 based on a request from Terry Melvin, CEO of the Training Institute for Addiction Counselors. He has been with CAADE every year since then. Each year he brings volunteers to assist with organizing the CAADE Conference. The conference volunteers are a core component of the annual conference. We are very grateful to Gary for his many years of exemplary service to CAADE.
