A Nazi drug’s US resurgence: How meth is making a disturbing reappearance
Users often report euphoria, increased alertness and reduced appetite; chronic users may experience paranoia, delusions and unpredictable mood swings.
Although I am teaching a course at Indiana University this semester on the opioid epidemic, I can’t get meth out of my mind.
Those who overdose may develop psychosis or abnormal heart rhythms.
A colleague of mine was recently carjacked. He was forced to drive at extreme speed throughout the city and escaped with his life only by intentionally crashing his car. My colleague told me he believes his gun-wielding assailant was suffering an acute psychosis related to methamphetamine use.
Pandemic Presents New Hurdles, and Hope, for People Struggling with Addiction
By  Nina Feldman, WHYY  06/12/20
“There’s social distancing — to a limit...I think when someone’s life is in jeopardy, they’re worth saving. You just can’t watch people die.”

Before Philadelphia shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Ed had a routine: most mornings he would head to a nearby McDonald’s to brush his teeth, wash his face and — when he had the money — buy a cup of coffee. He would bounce between homeless shelters and try to get a shower. But since businesses closed and many shelters stopped taking new admissions, Ed has been mostly shut off from that routine.
He’s still living on the streets.
Avoiding Family Drama During the Covid-19 Pandemic
By  Sarah Ratliff  06/09/20
When the pandemic broke out, for the first time since I left home, I felt conflicted between the need to learn my brothers are safe and my need to maintain a drama-free life.
Several times since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, I have wondered whether my brothers were safe. Knowing whether John*, my middle brother, was okay was easy. Although we’ve not talked to each other in 12 years, I found out through two of our mutual childhood friends that he was not one of the more than 350,000 people in his state who have contracted the virus.
COMPARISON: DANGERS OF CIGARETTES, E-CIGARETTES AND WATERPIPES
More difficult through a mask! –
June 25, 2020 – The study is the world’s first comparison of the effects of the three forms of smoking and vaping on human health and the function of cells that line blood vessels (the endothelium). It provides an overview of the available evidence about the harmful chemicals produced and the mechanisms by which smoking and vaping affect the body. The researchers also looked at the effects of each on medical conditions ranging from stroke to heart attacks and lung cancer.
The researchers found there were multiple good studies showing that, overall, tobacco cigarettes were more harmful than e-cigarettes. However, there were few good, large studies about the adverse effects of waterpipes (often referred to as hookahs, shisha or narghile) and e-cigarettes on endothelial dysfunction and so the evidence was more variable. The researchers say the long-term effects of water pipes and e-cigarettes need to be investigated more thoroughly. In the meantime, they write, “waterpipe smoking is not less harmful than tobacco smoking and thus cannot be considered a healthy alternative”.
