An App Can Help Fight Drug Addiction Relapse
A computer game, on the verge of becoming a smartphone app, can use math to detect a patient’s comfort with risk-taking. Specifically, the game is based on numerical test scores that can adequately predict the desire to use drugs and has applications for the opioid epidemic. Results indicate that patients with an 85% score will likely reuse drugs, such as opioids, within the next week. The study is believed to lead to the design of new tools for the tracking and assessment of patients who reuse opiates during treatment.

If someone uses drugs, does that mean they don’t deserve our compassion?
By
Because it’s the holiday season, a lot of people are sharing online about giving. Recently on
Facebook
, one particular post kept showing up in my feed. In the photo, a woman is hugging a homeless person she had just bought a meal for. The lengthy post speaks of compassion and kindness, of caring for others, of treating homeless folks with humanity.
But the post ends with this: “Not all of them are homeless because of a drug addiction or because they are lazy.”

Date:

Summary:
What drives a person to smoke cigarettes? What role do emotions play in this addictive behavior? Why do some smokers puff more often and more deeply or relapse many years after they've quit? Benzodiazepines: Another Prescription Drug Problem

Benzodiazepines, a class of anti-anxiety drugs, are commonly-prescribed medications with the potential for abuse, addiction and overdose. Sound familiar? The parallels to the opioid epidemic are apparent; some physicians have taken to calling it “

Internet Addiction Reduces Study Skills in College Students, Ups Loneliness
Associate News Editor
New research shows that students who use digital technology excessively are less motivated to study and are more anxious about tests.
This effect was made worse by the increased feelings of loneliness that the use of digital technology produced, according to researchers at Swansea University in the U.K. and the University of Milan in Italy.
For the study, researchers recruited 285 university students enrolled in a range of health-related degree courses. The students were assessed for their use of digital technology, their study skills and motivation,
