April 2018
From the President
Greetings, Colleagues, and Happy Spring!
With two months remaining in my term as president, I want to thank you for the opportunity to work closely with exceptionally talented and dedicated staff and volunteers in the service of quality health career programs.
Going forward, all of us in the accreditation world are likely to face new challenges, and responsiveness to a changing world will be more important than ever.
As you will likely recall, a few months ago I alerted you to the expectation that we all need to be prepared for greater public accountability and more stringent reporting requirements for program outcomes. Recent correspondence from CHEA reinforced that expectation, and it appears that stronger transparency-related requirements must be met by CAAHEP-accredited programs on an accelerated timeline. Two CHEA Standards in particular appear to require our timely attention, 12B1 and 12B5.
CHEA Standard 12B1 – calls for the accreditor to have accreditation standards or policies that require institutions or programs routinely to provide reliable information to the public on their performance, including student achievement, as determined by the institution or program. While many programs have publicly posted data on performance, including student achievement, some have not.
CHEA Standard 12B5 – calls for the accreditor to inform the public of the bases and reasons for its final accreditation decisions. In order to disclose the bases for all accreditation decisions, CAAHEP will need to modify its confidentiality policy.
With a strong CAAHEP structure that promotes both program quality and continuous improvement, and with the talented and dedicated staff and volunteers that constitute CAAHEP, I believe we are well positioned to work collaboratively to meet whatever challenges lie ahead. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you for our annual meeting in Louisville next weekend.
Carolyn O'Daniel, EdD, RRT

April is Interprofessional Health Care Month
|
|
April is National Interprofessional Healthcare Month, bringing attention to the fact that quality health care is provided collaboratively by professionals of multiple disciplines. As CAAHEP accredits education programs in 30 health disciplines, we recognize the importance of interprofessional healthcare.
At its March meeting, the CAAHEP Board voted to join the Health Professions Accreditation Collaborative (HPAC) and the development of a guidance document as a summation of interprofessional education learning activities.
The
Health Professions Accreditors Collaborative
was established in December 2014 to formalize interactions among accrediting bodies, beginning with interprofessional education (IPE), and to serve as a platform for proactive problem solving and sharing among accreditors. HPAC members define “program” within the context of this guidance document as the summation of all IPE learning activities required of students to complete their respective degrees. The HPAC wants to be clear that the IPE program is not a new degree program – it is an intentionally designed and sequenced series of educational activities, grounded in objectives and supported by appropriate resources, intended to produce collaborative practice-ready graduates.
HPAC partnered with the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education to advance this work.
All members of HPAC are also members of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors
Please watch for updates on HPAC activities in coming issues of the CAAHEP newsletter.

Each profession in the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) system has a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) that consists of experts in the profession that are responsible for reviewing programs and making appropriate recommendations for accreditation to CAAHEP.
