Every time I interface with the CAAHEP family at one of our events, I consistently leave amazed at the talent and commitment of each family member.  The July Committees on Accreditation (CoA) Workshop was no exception. New CoAs interfacing with a network of receptive mature CoAs (notice I did not say old timers), presenters bring concrete solutions and thoughtful discussion on the myriad of challenges of programmatic accreditation, and a general sharing of mutual support.  I cannot say enough about the power of our collective and the giving nature of the CAAHEP folks.

Among the topics at the workshop was a meaningful discussion, hosted by CAAHEP's Standards Committee (SC), on the CAAHEP Standards for Accreditation. The collective had varied opinions but the sharing, discussion, and input to the SC was invaluable as they deliberate potential template changes. I am sure there is more to come.

I wanted to take a moment to also acknowledge the award, "Legends Who Walk Among Us," that was presented to Dr. George Hatch of the CoAEMSP from the National Association of EMS Educators. It is among the Association's highest honors. Congratulations, George.

As always, accreditation remains a topic in Washington, DC. While most of the attention is on institutional accreditation, as a programmatic accreditor, CAAHEP continues to monitor activities and events. As some may recall, public policy was among the activities noted in CAAHEP's strategic planning process. Executive Director Kathleen Megivern continues to track activities and keep the Board informed.

One of the most interesting developments came on August 16, 2016, when the US Department of Education announced the eight "partnerships" selected participate in a new program called EQUIP (Educational Quality through Innovation Partnerships) experiment. The fact sheet provided by USDE goes on to say:

"EQUIP falls under the Experimental Sites Initiatives, which test the effectiveness of statutory and regulatory flexibility for postsecondary institutions that disburse federal financial aid. Through the EQUIP program, the Department seeks to learn about these new models and their costs and educational and employment outcomes for students, as well as explore new methods to measure quality. Testing and learning from this program may help inform future policy reforms." (Emphasis added).

Each winning partnership includes an "innovative" education provider (such as coding or software "boot camps" or companies providing online learning); a traditional college or university; and a third-party quality assurance entity (QAE). "QAEs will hold the non-traditional providers and postsecondary institutions accountable by assessing the student outcomes, including learning and employment and the management of the program." The list of QAEs includes some familiar names such as CHEA, ANSI and the American Council on Education.  Projects range from a 12-week software development boot camp to an accelerated bachelor of science in Advanced Manufacturing.

These projects are aimed at the same "non-traditional" student population being served by many of CAAHEP's accredited programs and we will watch with great interest as they progress, especially the work of the "QAEs."

CAAHEP Accredits the First Advanced Cardiovascular Sonography Program     
 
Congratulations to  Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, CA on becoming the first CAAHEP accredited Advanced Cardiovascular Sonography (ACS) program. Advanced Cardiovascular Sonographers are health care professionals with specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in cardiac sonography. The formal educational pathway provides advancement opportunities for the sonographer with additional practice levels and professions within echocardiography laboratories.
 
For information on offering a ACS program at your school, please contact the  Committee on Accreditation for Advanced Cardiovascular Sonography. 
 
CAAHEP Programs Report Outcomes   
 
The cornerstone of CAAHEP accreditation is a program's outcomes. And, one of the requirements of CAAHEP being recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation ( CHEA) is that CAAHEP accredited programs must publish their outcomes, and electronic links to those outcomes must be published on the CAAHEP website. With over 2,000 accredited programs, collecting the web address of each program's outcomes has been a monumental task. Since late 2015, CAAHEP has been collecting and recording the links to electronically-published outcomes of our programs. As of July, we are proud to report electronic outcome links for 88% of programs accredited by CAAHEP are now posted on the CAAHEP website. The CAAHEP staff continues to gather URLs from programs daily, as well as monitors these links for accuracy, in an effort to reach 100% reporting rate. Providing links to program outcomes, as well as links to accredited programs' websites, assists potential students in making sound decisions on their future education. CoA Summer Workshop Success  
 
The annual CoA Summer Workshop was held in July in Orlando, Florida. This program is designed by and for the leadership of the Committees on Accreditation (CoAs) that work with each program as they move through the CAAHEP accreditation process. The Summer Workshop gives the CoA leadership a chance to share best practices, analyze trends, celebrate successes, and generally learn through networking with others who share similar experiences. The 2016 Workshop was a free-flowing discussion on a multitude of topics including: Emergency Transition Planning, the Use of Simulation during the Clinical Experience, Writing Effective Citations, the Training Board Members, and more.

During the program, the Joint Review Committee on Cardiovascular Technology recognized Kathleen Megivern and the CAAHEP staff for management assistance provided to the JRC-CVT following the passing of Bill Goding, the JRC-CVT Executive Director. Here, Ray Lenius Vice Chair of JRC-CVT, and Jackie Long-Goding, present a commemorative clock to Kathleen Megivern.
 
 
Accreditation Actions

Each profession in the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) system has a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) that consists of experts in the profession that are responsible for reviewing programs and making appropriate recommendations for accreditation to CAAHEP. CAAHEP reviews recommendations received from its CoAs in each profession, assures due process was followed, and takes final action on an accreditation status.

CAAHEP took the following actions at its July 21, 2016 meeting. Actions are identified by profession, action taken, and date of the next comprehensive evaluation. In some cases, the concentration and/or degree are also specified. Where available, links to the programs' websites are included.
