August 2018
From the President
Who said summer was a time for play? It may be for school age children with no cares in the world but certainly not for anyone involved with CAAHEP. The Board of Directors met in July so the Board members, executive director and staff had a lot of work to do prior to, during and after the meeting. As if that was not enough, there was the annual CoA Summer Workshop immediately after the Board meeting. All in all, it was a productive and fun time in Cleveland, Ohio.
July brought the new Board of Directors together for the first time. It was nice to welcome the new members to the meeting and orient them into their role. The committees met on Wednesday afternoon and into the evening and then the entire Board met on Thursday. The new members jumped right in and offered new insight. Special thanks to the CAAHEP staff and seasoned Board members who provided a historical background of past practice and committee obligations.
The Board agenda included the following: The Recommendation Review Committee Report which included all submitted accreditation actions to date, a report from the Planning and Development Committee on future meetings, the Performance Oversight Committee’s report on past surveys compiled since the last meeting, and the Standards Committee report. These Committees put in a lot of time between Board meetings to ensure that the CAAHEP work continues to flow smoothly. A special thanks to everyone who works hard to meet the deadlines and Committee goals.
There were two items that the Board discussed extensively last month. The first item was the follow up report that we must submit to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in October. Although the CAAHEP executive director and staff and CoAs have been working diligently to meet the requirement to post outcomes on program websites, we are close but not at 100% compliance. The executive director and staff have reached out to all CoAs to help get this done as soon as possible as we must be at 100% compliance when we submit our final report this fall. The other outstanding items have been addressed.
The second Board discussion was on strategic planning. It is hard to believe that our current Strategic Plan is done. Perhaps time does fly by. The Board decided to change its routine January meeting schedule to include time to develop a new CAAHEP Strategic Plan. I look forward to developing a new plan with the help of the Board and staff. Once it is done, the new Strategic Plan will be shared as appropriate.
The CoA Workshop included so much valuable information and lively presentations that it will be hard to summarize the workshop. Despite my years of experience as a commissioner, I am still learning new things and how to make life a little easier. If you missed the workshop, please plan on attending next July. Once again, the executive director and staff did a fantastic job putting together the program and various activities so thank you for making it a success.
As the new President, I want to thank all of those who came before me. Since I became involved with CAAHEP as a commissioner, I had the honor of working with the following past Presidents: Lacheeta McPherson, Cameron Harris, Thom Salko, Carolyn O’Daniel. I learned so much from them as leaders and hope to fill their shoes with as much professionalism, enthusiasm and integrity as they did when they served as CAAHEP President. I owe them for setting a good example on how to be a successful and effective President.
In closing, as CAAHEP continues to improve, change is sometimes necessary. CHEA continues to implement new requirements which means that CAAHEP and CoAs need to make changes in the way we conduct business. Please be flexible and comply as necessary. Be sure to read through every CAAHEP publication and take action as necessary. Enjoy the remainder of your summer.
Gregory Ferenchak, Ed.D., R.T.(R)(QM)

Posting Outcomes on Program Websites
|
|
As all CAAHEP-accredited programs know, programs must maintain, and make available to the public, current and consistent summary information about student/graduate achievement that includes the results of one or more of the outcomes assessments required in these Standards. Each profession’s Committee on Accreditation has adopted a policy about which outcome(s) it requires its programs to publish. The program should keep CAAHEP informed of the appropriate link to the URL where the public can find the outcomes(s). This reporting is critical to CAAHEP’s successfully meeting the recognition requirements of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
The CAAHEP staff has been working diligently to check and re-check the website links of accredited programs in preparation for CAAHEP’s interim report response due October 1, 2018. In response to new CHEA requirements, CAAHEP has changed how accreditation actions are reported. Previously, CAAHEP reported the citations of programs placed on probation. Now, if any program receives citations (initial, continuing, and probation), CAAHEP is reporting those citations in its Accreditation Actions Reports, along with links to the Standards. The following is a sample of how citations are now being reported:
The following programs were found to be in substantial compliance with the accreditation Standards and Guidelines, with one or more Standards requiring a progress report to be submitted to the appropriate Committee on Accreditation (CoA). The programs were granted continuing accreditation, with the next comprehensive evaluation to occur no later than 20xx.

Each profession in the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) system has a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) that consists of experts in the profession that are responsible for reviewing programs and making appropriate recommendations for accreditation to CAAHEP. CAAHEP reviews recommendations received from its CoAs in each profession, assures due process was followed, and takes final action on an accreditation status.
CAAHEP took the following actions at its July 19, 2018 meeting. Actions are identified by profession, action taken, and date of the next comprehensive evaluation. In some cases, the concentration and/or degree are also specified. Actions requiring a progress report list the affected Standard(s) and due date by which the program must submit a report of progress related to the Standard(s).
For a complete copy of the Standards, check the
