From the President
Thomas Skalko

Well, another calendar year has passed and the holidays are upon us. A lot has happened this past year and CAAHEP has been busy to say the least.

Standards Approvals for Committees on Accreditation
CAAHEP could not be more proud of our Standards Committee and the quality of their work. This committee has been more than active in the review and revision of standards for several Committees on Accreditation (CoAs). A special thank you is extended to the members of the Committee: Chair Jennifer Anderson-Warwick, Kate Feinstein, Jeffery Hill, Katie Kuntz, LaCheeta McPherson, Julie O'Sullivan Malliet, and Keith Orloff. With the support of our CAAHEP staff, Kalyani Naik and Lorna Frazier-Lindsey, every member of this Committee has been attentive and worked with the CoAs in the finalization of several sets of standards. Congratulations to the following Committees on Accreditation for seeing to completion their standards in 2016: Committee on Accreditation for Advanced Cardiovascular Sonography, Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Education Committee on Accreditation, Accreditation Council for Art Therapy Education, Medical Scribe Specialist Review Board, and Accreditation Review Committee for the Anesthesiologist Assistant. In addition, several other CoAs have been engaged in the process of updating standards so the Committee is working diligently to assist and bring to the Board these standards for action.

New Professions:
CAAHEP would like to welcome the Orthotic and Prosthetic Assistants and the  Pedorthists as two related professions under the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education committee. These two professions will begin to work on drafting Standards and Guidelines.

CAAHEP Working on Your Behalf
CAAHEP has continued to work on behalf of all of our stakeholders. The number of activities and accomplishments is amazing. Over the past year, CAAHEP has:
  • Remained active on the organization's Strategic Plan;
  • Continued efforts to finalize a new website (coming soon!);
  • Been working to bring to fruition digital resources to all of our CoAs in the form of electronic self-studies and electronic annual reporting;
  • Worked with other organizations in efforts to educate public policy officials and to advocate on the value of programmatic accreditation;
  • Embarked on more focused marketing efforts to promote the CAAHEP brand; and
  • Invested in supports to our CoAs to build depth in their educational sponsors.

In addition, CAAHEP sponsored successful meetings across the year. From the January Leadership Workshop, the Annual Meeting, and the July CoA Workshop, the quality of the content and the quality of the interactions of our stakeholders has been outstanding!

Finally, I want to take a moment to thank the staff of CAAHEP for the quality of their work. Under the stewardship of our Executive Director, Kathy Megivern and staff, Lorna Frazier-Lindsey, Cynthia Jackson-McNeill, Katie Davis, Theresa Sisneros, and Kalyani Naik, CAAHEP has been growing and blossoming. The same goes for each of our working committees. The amount of work performed by the volunteers of CAAHEP is invaluable and significant. I want to thank: Carolyn O'Daniel, Chair of Recommendation Review Committee; Jennifer Anderson-Warwick, Chair, Standards Committee; Greg Ferenchak, Chair, Performance Oversight Committee; and Susan Fuchs, Chair, Planning and Development Committee, as well and the membership of each committee. When you see any of these folks, please take a moment to thank them for their efforts. They are working on your behalf in our mission to provide the gold standard for allied health accreditation.

I wish everyone a safe and peaceful holiday season. If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to reach out.  We will be there for you.

2017 CAAHEP Annual Meeting Keynote Speaker Announced

The 2017 CAAHEP Annual Meeting will be held April 23-24, 2017, at the JW Marriott Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia. This year's theme is
"Quality Improvement vs. Quality Assurance: Can we be both Counselors and Cops?" Sessions planned include a Washington Update on education issues on Capitol Hill, progress on CAAHEP's Strategic Plan, research finding from an exploration of program director leadership practices in nationally accredited paramedic education programs, the annual spotlight on two CAAHEP professions, a panel discussion of employers, spotlight on sponsoring organizations, and much more.

CAAHEP is pleased to announce that the program will kick off with a keynote address Dr. Judith Eaton, President, of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).  CHEA is the largest institutional higher education membership organization in the United States and is the organization that recognizes CAAHEP. A national advocate and institutional voice for self-regulation of academic quality through accreditation, CHEA is an association of 3,000 degree-granting colleges and universities.

CHEA works with the presidents and chief academic officers of colleges and universities, accreditors, policy makers and higher education leaders around the world, providing authoritative information and leadership on issues related to accreditation and quality assurance, the federal government-accreditation relationship and enhancing public confidence in accreditation. CHEA is the only private sector body in the United States that "recognizes" U.S. institutional and programmatic accreditors for quality, scrutinizing these organizations and affirming that they meet CHEA's quality standards. At present, 60 accreditors are CHEA-recognized, including CAAHEP.

Prior to her work at CHEA, Dr. Eaton served as chancellor of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, where she was responsible for leadership and coordination of 32 institutions serving more than 162,000 students statewide. Previously, she was president of the Council for Aid to Education, Community College of Philadelphia and the Community College of Southern Nevada, and served as vice president of the American Council on Education. She also has held full- and part-time teaching positions at Columbia University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.

Watch for updates and registration material on the CAAHEP website after the first of the year. Please plan to join us for the 2017 CAAHEP Annual Meeting.
