CAAHEP Communiqué
December 2019
From the President

It’s hard to believe we are closing out another year. I hope everyone had a blessed and thankful Thanksgiving. I was fortunate and did not have to travel far to be with family and friends. As we enter into December our focus shifts to thinking about the upcoming holidays and the work that needs to occur to close out the year along with what will be facing us in the new year. Being in an academic setting, we prepare final exams, attend December commencement, and start planning for the next semester. Students are preparing for exams and thinking about their holiday break spending time with family and friends.

As we reflect back, the year has been filled with a tremendous amount of activity, vision, innovation and yes, a few challenges. One of biggest accomplishments this year was the completion of a new strategic plan that focuses on four (4) key areas: Efficiency and Consistency of Standard and Policies, Strengthening Relationships, Sustainability, and Innovative Delivery Models. One of the biggest challenges we faced this year was the unexpected changes to our database platform that runs many of the accreditation action functions. The CAAHEP staff worked extremely hard behind the scenes to minimize the disruptions and kept processes moving forward.

The Standards Committee has reviewed and approved five (5) sets of CoA standards revisions and have a new CAAHEP Standards Template almost completed. This has required them to meet every month and sometimes multiple times a month. The Recommendations Review Committee (RRC) reviewed over 400 reports of which 84 were initial accreditation reviews. The Performance Oversight Committee has been extremely busy this year as well reviewing how well we’ve done, along with revising and developing new policies. Also, a big thank you to the Annual Meeting Program Planning Committee for putting together great program of interesting speakers and sessions. We hope that translate to excellent turnouts and outcomes. I hope to see you at one of our upcoming leadership conferences or the annual meeting in 2020.

I want to take a moment and thank all of you for the work you do every day educating the best health sciences and health professionals to fulfill the needs of the healthcare industry and serve the clients and patients with best possible care. Thank you to all the Board of Directors for proving guidance and leadership for our organization. Thank you to all of the Commissioners representing their professions and organizations. Thank you to all the Liaisons for serving as a conduit for between CAAHEP and the CoAs. Finally, I want to take a moment and thank all the CAAHEP Staff for the work they do on a daily basis: Kathy Megivern, Executive Director; Katie Davis, Accreditation Assistant; Lorna Frazier-Lindsey, Director of Information and Communications; Cynthia Jackson-McNeill, Executive Assistant and Meeting Planner; Kalyani Naik, Standards Specialist; and Theresa Sisneros, Director of Accreditation Services.

I look forward to 2020 as we execute our new strategic plan and strive to accomplish our vision of being the innovative leader for accreditation of health sciences and health professions education.

In the meantime Happy Holidays!

President Glen Mayhew, DHSc, NRP

CAAHEP Site Visit Webinar Available
" The CAAHEP Site Visit: What to Expect, How to Prepare," a webinar that was conducted on December 3rd is now available for viewing on the CAAHEP website, along with the corresponding session handouts.

Hosting a site visit can be scary if you’ve not experienced one before. The philosophy of CAAHEP site visits is to function in a consultative approach with transparency. Accreditation site visits are an opportunity to obtain in-depth information concerning all administrative and educational aspects of the program. Site visits permit a team of peers to assess a program's compliance with the CAAHEP accreditation Standards. The site visit verifies and supplements the information contained in the comprehensive self-study report completed by the program. Information provided in the self-study report is confirmed, documentation is reviewed, interviews are conducted, and the program is observed by the site visit team.

This webinar will:
  • Explain the purpose of an accreditation visit
  • Describe the philosophy of a CAAHEP accreditation site visit
  • Identify documents needed for the site visit
  • Define methods for organizing necessary documents for the site visit
  • Recommend options for preparing faculty for the site visit

Visit the Webinar page on the CAAHEP website to view the session.

Accreditation Actions
Each profession in the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) system has a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) that consists of experts in the profession that are responsible for reviewing programs and making appropriate recommendations for accreditation to CAAHEP. CAAHEP reviews recommendations received from its CoAs in each profession, assures due process was followed, and takes final action on an accreditation status.

CAAHEP took the following actions at the November 15, 2019 meeting. Actions are identified by profession, action taken, date of the next comprehensive evaluation, and whether a progress report to improve program compliance is required. In some cases, the concentration and/or degree are also specified. To view a copy of the most recent accreditation award letter for a program, which includes information about the accreditation decision, visit the program’s listing on the Find An Accredited Program section of the CAAHEP website .
