December 2020
From the President
December is upon us and I sincerely hope that everyone was able to at least have a short break to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday. The fall semester/session has either concluded or is about to conclude and while it has been very difficult for us all, it’s great to hear the success stories of how we’ve adapted in these trying times to ensure successful outcomes.
It has been refreshing to see and hear the participation in the series of webinars that CAAHEP has been producing as part of our strategic plan communication plan. The topics have been timely and engaging with our CoAs, educators, and other constituents. If you haven’t had the opportunity to participate yet, I would encourage you to do so. These provide a meaningful way to discuss topics and allow for networking and sharing of information across professions.
Additionally, the CAAHEP staff have been very busy working with our vendor on our website and the Annual Report tool is now complete. We are anticipating some further refinement of the website and hub to make it easier to navigate for the end-user.
We had a very productive November Board of Directors meeting and I was pleased to hear from the Audit Committee that we received a clean audit report for the fiscal year 19 – 20. The Standards Committee provided an overview of the process that our proposed new standards template underwent the last several years. The new template will be voted on by the Board in January. I was also pleased to hear that the Distance Education Task Force has made considerable progress and will present a white paper to the Board in January with recommendations regarding distance education.
I can’t say enough about the tremendous amount of the work that has been done by the CAAHEP Staff, CoAs, Board, Committees/Taskforces, and Educational Programs this year. We have overcome challenge after challenge turning them into opportunities and possibilities. One such accomplishment was implementing virtual site visits. Previously, there had been intermittent discussion about the topic, but no firm action except by one Committee. We were able to quickly turn this action into a gameplan and hosted numerous virtual site visits this year. I want to thank the JRC-DMS for being such a leader in this area and, in the spirit of CAAHEP, sharing their information, policies, and processes.
As a point of business, I want to make sure that everyone is aware that the address has changed for CAAHEP. The new address is:
9355 113th Street N., #7709, Seminole, FL 33775-7709
The phone, fax, and email address remain the same. This was a strategic move as many organizations have found, they can operate efficiently and fiscally sound while employees work from home.
As we plan for 2021, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone to register for the upcoming 2021 Annual Meeting “Alone but Together: Building Virtual Bridges in 2021.” This virtual meeting has been significantly discounted to just $49 to ensure that more of you can participate. We have an exciting line-up of speakers which includes the new President of CHEA Cynthia Jackson-Hammond. Please see the related article below for all the details and to register.
On behalf of the CAAHEP Board of Directors and Staff, we want to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and wonderful holiday season, and may 2021 be a brighter year.
Stay Well,
Glen
Glen Mayhew, DHSc, NRP
CAAHEP President

Association of Medical Illustrators Recognized
|
|
Association Now, the magazine of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), has recognized the Association of Medical Illustrators as one of the 100 associations that will change the world. Among the associations recognized under the Coronavirus Response for "Visualizing a Virus," the ASAE magazine highlighted how AMI's members worked together to create "visual training materials for front-line healthcare professionals responding to the pandemic."
AMI's Executive Director Whitney Wilgus was quoted, "The collaborative effort highlights the "power of associations" as hubs for knowledge exchange in the professions they represent."
In April 2020, Communiqué reported on a New York Times article that highlighted CDC Medical Illustrators Alissa Eckert and Dan Higgins for their work in creating an image of the Coronavirus, right, which has now been used worldwide. The article brings to light the importance of medical illustrations in understanding complex medical terms and diseases.
