The new year is off to a great start. Since our last
Communiqué
, CAAHEP held the annual Leadership Workshop in Tampa, FL, responded to multiple updates of Committee on Accreditation Standards, and has kept an eye on the changing landscape of accreditation.
Standards Approvals for Committees on Accreditation
CAAHEP could not be more proud of our Standards Committee and the quality of their work. This committee has been more than active in the review and revision of standards for several Committees on Accreditation (CoAs). Congratulations to the following Committees on Accreditation for seeing to completion their standards in January 2017 with the approval of the Standards by the CAAHEP Board of Directors:
- Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in Exercise Sciences
- Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in Exercise Physiology
- Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Medical Scribe Specialist (Appendix B change only)
In addition, open hearings were held for proposed Standards brought forward by the Committee on Accreditation of Academic Programs in Clinical Research and the Committee on Accreditation of Recreational Therapy Education. The CAAHEP Board will act on these two sets of Standards at the March 17 Board meeting. All Standards are posted on the CAAHEP website for review. Several other committees have been engaged in and /or recently completed the process to update standards. The Standards Committee is working diligently to assist and bring to the Board revised standards for action.
CAAHEP Working on Your Behalf
CAAHEP has continued to work on the behalf of all our stakeholders. We are truly proud of the value laden-activities and accomplishments of CAAHEP. Among recent accomplishments are:
- Continued efforts at quality improvement through continued dialogue on interpretation of standards;
- Soon to be completed efforts by Indigo Interactive, CAAHEP's contractor for our web-based services, to bring to fruition the redesigned CAAHEP website, the electronic Annual Reporting system, and the electronic Self-Study;
- CAAHEP's Task Group on Site Visitor Training is working on an on-line training module for use by all CAAHEP's Committees on Accreditation;
- CAAHEP's continued investment to assist each of the CoAs in the updating of standards to be congruent across CAAHEP CoAs; and
- CAAHEP's ongoing efforts to be the best, most supportive programmatic accreditation organization in the world.
I would be remiss if I did not take to time to note that the accomplishments of CAAHEP are attributed to all our volunteers and staff. CAAHEP has been blessed to have such a strong collection of committed stakeholders. CAAHEP's volunteer Board and Committee members, as well as those of our CoAs, make us the best. Our staff, thank goodness, keeps us out of trouble and our eye on the quality of our work. Please take time to thank your colleagues. Whether those persons are in your CoA or within the CAAHEP Board, committee structure, or staff, take a moment to thank them for their work and commitment. We owe all a debt of gratitude.
Other Notations:
Now that the Presidential election is over, it will behoove each of us to keep abreast of the happenings in the world of accreditation. Recent actions by the Department of Education to deny the appeal of the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) may be a sign of times to come. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D, MA) presented to the 2017 Annual Conference of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). It was apparent from her comments that the demands for accountability from academic accreditors will continue to increase. While programmatic accreditors are a bit less at risk than our regional accreditor counterparts, the call for accountability and outcome-based mechanisms of quality will continue to be the focus.
We would encourage each of you to keep abreast of the issues and to reach out to CAAHEP if we can be of assistance in any way. CAAHEP continues to interface with the Association of Specialized & Professional Accreditors (
ASPA) and other accrediting organizations to keep current with the issues and to respond in a timely and thoughtful way to challenges that face each of us.
In closing, let me thank you for your service and commitment to CAAHEP. We remain steadfast in our readiness to serve and look to each of you to help us accomplish that objective.
