From the President

I start this Communiqué posting with quite a range of emotions. This is my last Communiqué article as CAAHEP President. I can state, without reservation, that my terms as President of CAAHEP have been both educational and rewarding. So, let me begin by thanking each of you for the work you do on behalf of your CoA and CAAHEP. Without your efforts, my role as President could have been very different.
As I reflect on the past three years as President of CAAHEP, I continue to be amazed at the progress of CAAHEP and the efforts made to better serve our stakeholders, particularly from our Committees on Accreditation. During my tenure, CAAHEP engaged in a strategic planning effort that has offered direction and priority of action. Over the past three years, we have launched a new website; supported efforts in the public policy arena; empowered a representative Standards Committee to work with our CoAs in promoting consistency in standards; established a taskforce to create an on-line accreditation training module; and are on the cusp of launching an on-line accreditation reporting tool. By the way, the list goes on and on.
As I think of all these accomplishments, I must give credit where credit is due. The CAAHEP Board, and volunteers from our various CoAs deserve the credit. From the chairs and members of the Recommendations Review Committee, the Standards Committee, Planning and Development Committee, Performance Oversight Committee, and the numerous other committees and task forces, let me thank you for your service. Without you, the work of this organization would not be possible.
I would also be remiss if I did not recognize and thank the CAAHEP staff. Under the leadership of our Executive Director, Kathy Megivern, CAAHEP has continued to serve as a benchmark for programmatic accreditation in allied health. Kathy, however, would not be successful without the efforts of the CAAHEP Staff. My sincere thanks and deepest appreciation goes out to Lorna Frazier-Lindsey, Theresa Sisneros, Cynthia Jackson-McNeill, Katie Davis, and Kalyani Naik. Without these ladies, I would have been helpless. Thank you.
In closing, I want to thank the entire CAAHEP Family. I have been blessed in meeting new friends and colleagues. I am certain I will be maintaining many of these relationships long after my service to CAAHEP is completed.
As always, if there is anything I or CAAHEP can do to assist you in your efforts in programmatic accreditation, you simply need only ask.
I
Remain,
Thomas Skalko, Ph.D., LRT/CTRS, FDRT
President, CAAHEP

CAAHEP's Website Debuts a New Look!
CAAHEP's newly-designed website went live on May 15, 2017, and the feedback has been very positive. If you have not stopped by for a visit, please do so!
www.caahep.org
In the month since its debut, the site has had 40,792 visitors, and of those visitors 88.4% were new visitors to the site. CAAHEP's new home page has been the most visited page, followed by the Find an Accredited Program page. Profession description and certification information pages are also high on the list of frequent visits, as are the links to the Committees on Accreditation pages. The search functions have changed, so finding programs in a specific profession is quicker and sorting those programs offering online/distance education is even easier.
As with all websites, work continues on adding additional features and new content. We encourage you to come back to visit often to see what's new.

UPDATE: California Bill Defeated
In the last CAAHEP newsletter, there was an article that reported on a bill in the California Assembly that would take the notion of paid internships to an extreme level that threatened the survival of educational programs in allied health. The bill, A.B. 387, would require that clinical facilities pay minimum wage to all students who are placed for clinical education. The website of the Society for Diagnostic Medical Sonography provided information about this bill and its potential impact on allied health programs.
UPDATE: On June 6, 2017, the SDMS reported that with the assistance of other sonography professional organizations, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), and sonographers and allied health professionals in California, we successfully defeated California State Assembly Bill (AB) 387.
A.B. 387 would have required healthcare employers to pay allied health students minimum wage during any clinical training that was required for licensure, registration, or certification. The SDMS estimated the median cost of A.B. 387 would have been approximately $12,600 per sonography student. This expense would likely have caused many clinical sites to refuse to accept students resulting in a shortage of qualified sonographers in the state and the closure of sonography educational programs.

Accreditation Actions
Each profession in the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) system has a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) that consists of experts in the profession that are responsible for reviewing programs and making appropriate recommendations for accreditation to CAAHEP.
