SAMPLE MESSAGE
"Hello, my name is ______ and I am asking the Governor to sign AB 1868 by Assembly Member Rivas. This important bill will help California to have the data it needs to paint a picture of what our Long-Term English Learner students will need to be successful. Please support our students by signing AB 1868."

BACKGROUND
CABE is asking our friends and family to contact the Governor and urge him to sign AB 1868 authored by Assembly Member Luz Rivas, which seeks to disaggregate data in order to strengthen California’s guidance and resources to ensure Long-Term English Learner (LTEL) students are provided with targeted interventions that best meet their needs.
 
AB 1868 (Rivas), co-sponsored by CABE and Californians Together, will break down special education data by English language status and type of disability. In addition, it provides for further disaggregation of achievement data for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress by LTELs and students at risk of becoming LTELs, including in the areas of Mathematics, English Language Arts, and the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California.
 
This important bill is a fundamental step that California must take in order to appropriately serve our LTELs!

Highlighting our awesome CABE team members....
María Villa Márquez was born in Torrance, California, to immigrant parents from Mexicali, Baja California. Her father was a construction foreman, and her mother was a homemaker. She spoke primarily Spanish at home with her parents and her older brother and sister. Her education as an English learner began in English-only classrooms in Pre-K through 3rd grade, where the only nods to multicultural education were cultural celebrations. She immensely enjoyed these events that honored her cultural heritage.
She attended 4th grade through high school at a private Catholic school and, encouraged by her parents and pushed by her sister, she was determined to excel in school despite the challenges of being an English learner. She remembers her parents telling her and her siblings, “We want you to go to college and prepare for the future with a good education. ¡Sí, se puede!” In the 2021 edition of CABE’s Multilingual Educator magazine, María contributed this poem about her bilingual, bicultural heritage: “Where I’m From, De donde soy.”
After high school, she attended Long Beach State University, earning a B.A. in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Spanish and completing an M.A. in Early Childhood Education. Between her degrees, she met and married her husband of 28 years, Jorge Márquez, an I.T. Specialist and immigrant from Jalisco. Their son, Nathan (24,) is bilingual in English and Spanish, a baseball aficionado, and a die-hard Dodgers fan. He played baseball in high school and college and now plays in an adult league. He is a former high school assistant baseball coach and works as part of the ball crew for the L.A. Dodgers. María enjoys going to Dodgers games and watching her son catch foul balls that he then gives to excited kids attending the game.
María’s first job was grant coordinator in the Department of Education at Long Beach State. She managed 15 resource specialists and conducted parent focus groups on literacy and oral language development. Because of her passion for helping families and communities, she was hired at CABE in 2017 as a parent specialist for Project 2INSPIRE. She was later promoted to coordinator, and when CABE was awarded a federal grant for Project DELIGHT, she became CABE’s Director of Parent and Family Engagement. In 2021, she was applied for and was selected as Deputy Director, her position today. 
When asked why she values working for CABE, she replied, “I feel that CABE offers opportunities for employees to grow and flourish. I love that CABE embraces growth and ongoing mentorship.” Her work with parents and families reminds her of the struggles of her immigrant parents, who told her, “We want you to be better than us.” María believes that we can inspire others through our stories and that by creating space for listening and sharing, we can motivate others and offer hope.
María lives in Lakewood in South L.A. with her husband, son, mother, and three pets that bring her much joy. In her free time, she likes spending time at home—a safe space where she can relax, visit with family, and play with her dogs: Blanco, a Shih Tzu-Chihuahua mix, and Finn, a Shih Tzu-Maltese mix. She especially enjoys listening to the beautiful singing of her baby Indian Ring parrot, Perry. María’s strategies for relaxation include hanging out by her backyard pool and listening to instrumental piano music.
